A distressing incident unfolded in the province of Mayabeque when a group of individuals had to carry a coffin on foot for two kilometers to reach the cemetery, owing to the unavailability of proper transportation for the deceased.
In a video shared by the user "Javixcubalibre" on Instagram, several people can be seen holding the coffin placed on an old car, known locally as an "almendrón," while a woman provides a detailed account of the harrowing scene due to the absence of a funeral car.
“Walking two kilometers to the cemetery in San Antonio, Mayabeque, because there is no car. Walking, because we can't let it rot and ferment here. The mourner is one. Holding the coffin to bury the family member,” the woman can be heard saying.
Faced with no other alternatives, the group decided to walk to the cemetery, highlighting once again the deteriorating state of funeral transport in Cuba, where economic and logistical challenges increasingly impact essential services, including those for the deceased.
This is not the first time similar situations have been reported due to fuel shortages or the lack of vehicles in good condition.
In the comments section, several netizens emphasized the urgency for local authorities to take action to prevent such incidents from recurring.
As usual, local governments and regime-affiliated media remain silent, ignoring the ongoing debates about the quality of services on an island facing a widespread crisis.
