Maribel Pupo, a nurse from Cumanayagua in Cienfuegos province, tragically passed away on Monday due to injuries sustained from a brutal attack. The incident occurred when she urged a man to vaccinate his child, a task she was professionally obligated to perform.

The Cumanayagua Health Directorate expressed their deepest condolences on social media to Maribel Pupo's family, including her daughters and husband: “We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family, children, and spouse of Nurse Maribel Pupo following her passing this Monday.”

Local residents, colleagues, and patients recounted that Maribel Pupo, who worked in a family doctor’s office, was responsible for overseeing children's vaccination schedules in her community. The attack reportedly happened as she pressed a father to ensure his child received necessary vaccines. Several comments identified a young man as the alleged assailant.

The crime-reporting platform NiO Reportando Un Crimen, which initially brought attention to the assault, confirmed her death. According to their report, the attack took place on October 29 following Maribel's insistence that a couple bring their child for a pending vaccination.

NiO reported that Maribel suffered a blow that led to a fall, causing severe head injuries. She underwent surgery in Cienfuegos but remained in critical condition until her death. The platform identified her as a nurse in the Vaccination Department at the Aracelio Rodríguez Teaching Hospital.

While the Health Directorate confirmed her death, they did not detail the circumstances of the attack or the status of any investigation.

Cienfuegos journalist Alexis Alejandro Abril Lariño documented the case on social media, sharing images of the honor guard held by Cumanayagua nurses at her funeral.

The Cumanayagua community responded with an outpouring of grief and anger, posting thousands of messages. A colleague described her as “an exceptional nurse, a true professional, and above all, a remarkable human being. Her life was dedicated to her vocation, caring for others with dedication and compassion.”

This incident has sparked a debate over the policy requiring Cuban healthcare workers to "persuade" parents to vaccinate their children without legal or institutional protection. A Cuban doctor voiced frustration on social media, stating, “How long will Public Health allow its professionals to be trampled on without resources or conditions?”

Maribel Pupo's death adds to a growing list of assaults against healthcare workers in Cuba, a trend that has intensified in recent months. In August 2026, obstetrician Yanelkys Alonso Valdés was murdered in Güines. In June, an intensive care doctor was attacked in Cárdenas, Matanzas. In December 2025, nurse Rosa Idania Ferrer Pérez was killed in Palmira, also in Cienfuegos province.

“Our community mourns the loss of one of its most noble daughters,” wrote a Cumanayagua resident, echoing the community's call for justice and severe punishment for the attacker.
