On Monday, tech mogul Elon Musk shattered all previous records for political donations in the United States by contributing a staggering $474 million to the Republican Party during the midterm election cycle. This information, gathered by EFE based on federal records and research from The New York Times, highlights Musk's unprecedented financial influence.

Never before has a non-candidate donor reached such a monumental figure in a single election cycle. The previous record was held by Sheldon and Miriam Adelson, who donated approximately $218 million during the 2020 presidential cycle. Musk's investment for 2026 more than doubles their contribution.

Musk's substantial donations were allocated across various committees and organizations: $216 million went to America PAC, a super political action committee established by Musk himself; $168 million supported the Senate Leadership Fund, a major super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates; $30 million was directed to the Congressional Leadership Fund, focused on the House of Representatives; another $44 million aided other federal Republican groups and candidates; and $16 million targeted state political initiatives in Michigan, Texas, and Wisconsin.

The actual total could be even higher. Federal records only account for contributions up to October 14, excluding the final three weeks of the campaign. Additionally, some of Musk's contributions were channeled through "dark money" structures, whose sources are not always publicly disclosed.

A significant portion of the identifiable spending — around $212 million — was concentrated in Texas, where Musk supported Republican Ken Paxton's Senate bid against Democrat James Talarico. Despite this massive investment, pre-election polls conducted by NYT/Siena indicated Talarico leading with 50% to Paxton's 43%.

Musk's spending is part of a larger trend, as the 2026 midterm elections also broke the record for political advertising expenditures in the U.S., surpassing even the 2024 presidential cycle with projections estimating $11.6 billion in total advertising, according to AdImpact.

This isn't Musk's first foray into leading political spending. In 2024, he allocated nearly $290 million to support Donald Trump's campaign, establishing himself as the largest individual donor of that cycle. Following Trump's victory, Musk headed the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was officially dissolved on July 4, 2026, after approximately 130 days in operation.

That period at the helm of DOGE, alongside contracts his companies held with the federal government and his involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, are now focal points for investigations that several Democratic legislators have pledged to initiate should they regain control of any congressional chambers in these elections.

During this Tuesday's election, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 Senate seats, and governorships in 36 states are up for grabs, with Democrats reportedly leading Republicans in several key states according to the latest polls.
