Renowned Cuban-American attorney Luis Fernández, a vocal advocate for human rights and Cuban freedom, passed away on the night of October 31 in Miami at the age of 75. His passing was confirmed on social media by fellow immigration lawyers Willy Allen and Santiago Alpízar, who were close friends and colleagues.

Born on October 23, 1951, in Sagua la Grande, Villa Clara, Fernández came from a family deeply rooted in legal tradition. His father, Luis Fernández-Caubi, established the family law firm in Cuba in 1949 and taught at the University of Santo Tomás de Villanueva. After going into exile, the firm was reestablished in Miami in 1976, becoming a third-generation law practice.

Fernández completed his undergraduate studies at Florida Atlantic University and earned his law degree from the University of Florida. He was admitted to the state bar on April 12, 1979, and practiced both criminal and civil litigation throughout South Florida for over forty years.

Dedication to the Cuban Cause

Fernández's career was notably defined by his dedication to the Cuban cause. In 1988, his law firm played a crucial role in an international campaign that successfully pressured the Cuban regime to release a large number of political prisoners.

He also worked closely with the Democracy Movement, an exile organization led by Ramón Saúl Sánchez, whose immigration status in the United States drew public attention over the years.

Pioneering Initiatives Against Human Rights Violations

In 2010, Fernández was among four Cuban-American lawyers, including Wilfredo Allen, Ricardo Martínez-Cid, and Santiago Alpízar, who launched the Represores ID project. This groundbreaking initiative aimed to identify Cuban State Security agents and civilians accused of human rights violations who had entered the United States unrecognized, using photos, videos, and testimonies. The information gathered was provided to the FBI and U.S. immigration authorities.

This effort paved the way for future initiatives, and over 100 Cuban repressors have reportedly arrived in the United States in recent years, according to human rights organizations. Identifying these individuals remains a priority for the Cuban-American community.

As of the closure of this report, the cause of Fernández's death and details of his funeral had not been officially disclosed.

The news deeply affected those who knew him. Allen described it as "a devastating loss," while Alpízar paid tribute on Facebook, stating, "On the night of October 31, 2026, Luis Fernández, an honorable Cuban, a cherished brother and friend, an attorney for all, and a patriot, passed away. Now in Glory, he will continue to be a beacon and guide for those who always found solidarity and refuge in him, no matter the circumstances."
