Cuban baseball player Yandy Díaz is set to receive a guaranteed $13 million with the Tampa Bay Rays for the 2027 season. This follows the automatic activation of a contract clause after meeting certain conditions, as reported by Pelota Cubana, referencing journalist Marc Topkin from the Tampa Bay Times.

The option became official because Díaz, hailing from Villa Clara, met two specific requirements: achieving 500 plate appearances, a milestone he reached in August, and finishing the season in good physical condition.

In March 2025, the Rays incorporated the 2027 agreement into Díaz's contract. At that time, they exercised a $12 million option for the 2026 season. Originally, the structure included a $10 million club option, which turned into a $13 million guarantee if Díaz surpassed the participation threshold. By meeting these conditions, Tampa Bay secures the continued presence of one of its most productive hitters.

At 35, the Sagua la Grande native completed an impressive 2026 season. He finished the regular season with a .293 batting average, 22 home runs, 85 RBIs, 93 runs scored, and 180 hits across 154 games, alongside an on-base percentage of .359 and a slugging percentage of .446.

His 180 hits led the American League, solidifying his status as one of the circuit's most consistent contact hitters.

Díaz also shone in the postseason. During the American League Championship Series, he batted .333 and hit two home runs, helping Tampa Bay reach the 2026 World Series, their first appearance since 2020.

Despite their efforts, the Rays couldn't clinch the title: the Milwaukee Brewers won their first-ever championship by defeating Tampa Bay four games to one. In the Fall Classic, Díaz had a quieter performance, with three hits in 20 at-bats and one RBI.

In July, Díaz made history by becoming the fourth player to reach 1,000 hits with the franchise and the first Cuban-origin player to do so. By the end of the season, he had amassed 115 home runs with Tampa Bay, ranking sixth in the club's history.

Díaz joined the Rays in December 2018 from Cleveland in a three-team trade. In 2023, he won the American League batting title with a .330 average, becoming the first player in franchise history to achieve this feat.

"After another stellar season and aiding the Rays in reaching the World Series, the 2027 deal is now officially sealed," Pelota Cubana summarized in their announcement of the news.
