The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties due to anticipated heavy rainfall. Some areas in South Florida could see up to seven inches (nearly 18 centimeters) of rain.

This warning is in effect from 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, until 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Rainfall totals are expected to range from three to five inches in various locations, with localized areas receiving even more, as reported by WSVN.

The NWS cautioned that these downpours might lead to street flooding, road closures, and damage to properties in vulnerable areas.

Heightened Flood Risk in Broward and Northern Miami-Dade

The threat is particularly significant in Broward and northern Miami-Dade, where CBS Miami has assessed the flash flood risk at level 2.

Storms are predicted to intensify on Sunday afternoon and evening, potentially continuing into Monday. Easterly winds are expected to create rain bands that repeatedly affect the same areas.

Saturated Soil Increases Flooding Concerns

The ground is already saturated, complicating drainage. High water tables persist after several days of unusually high tides, making it difficult for new rainfall to be absorbed.

Meteorologist Chelsea Ambriz from NBC 6 warned of "limited space for any heavy rain to drain," advising areas prone to flooding to anticipate water accumulation.

Low-lying communities such as Hialeah, along with others with poor drainage, may experience rapid flooding in streets and residential zones.

Driving Hazards and Safety Recommendations

The danger to drivers is heightened. The NWS reminds the public that just six inches of water can result in a loss of vehicle control, while a foot can float many vehicles. Authorities strongly advise against attempting to drive through flooded roads.

Compounding the situation, Florida's recent time change means it will get dark about an hour earlier, reducing visibility for those driving in the rain during late afternoon hours.

Beach and Election Day Forecasts

In Broward beaches, a high surf advisory remains, along with a persistent risk of rip currents.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, November 3, which is Election Day in the United States, weather conditions are expected to improve, although there is still a 50% chance of rain.
