The United States military has positioned air defense systems close to Mar-a-Lago, the Florida estate of former President Donald Trump located in Palm Beach, as well as near the city's airport. This move is part of an enhanced security measure in anticipation of a possible visit by Trump over the Halloween weekend.

This operation was carried out by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM), following a request from the Secret Service. Although officials have not pointed out any specific threat that prompted this deployment, they have also not specified how long the equipment will remain in place.

According to the EFE news agency, these air defense systems have been stationed on barges near Mar-a-Lago and at the President Donald J. Trump International Airport, previously named Palm Beach International Airport. Local news channel WPTV reported on October 26 the presence of two anti-aircraft systems on a barge in the Intracoastal Waterway, in the vicinity of the presidential residence. The equipment was also visible from Southern Boulevard, a key access route to the area.

Understanding the Avenger Anti-Aircraft Systems

Among the deployed equipment is the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger, a short-range air defense system mounted on a military Humvee. Its primary function is to intercept low-altitude threats. The Avenger is equipped with a rotating turret that holds two containers of FIM-92 Stinger surface-to-air missiles, capable of carrying up to eight missiles, alongside a .50 caliber machine gun.

This system is effective against drones, helicopters, and certain low-flying aircraft, although it is not designed to intercept ballistic missiles. The Secret Service has indicated that it operates in a high-threat environment and has requested additional capabilities to counter small unmanned aerial systems. Nevertheless, neither the Secret Service nor the military commands have indicated any immediate threat to Mar-a-Lago.

Retired Lt. Col. Octavio Pérez, a Cuban-American defense intelligence analyst and co-founder of the Miami Strategic Intelligence Institute, explained to NBC Miami that the Avenger augments the presidential security against potential low-altitude aerial threats. Scenarios mentioned include the use of drones, helicopters, or small civilian aircraft, such as Piper or Cessna models.

Pérez also highlighted the potential influence of the security context surrounding the upcoming U.S. legislative elections and the G20 summit scheduled in Miami on protection decisions, though no official link between these events and the deployment has been confirmed.

Increased Aerial Incidents Near Palm Beach

The military reinforcement follows numerous incidents relating to airspace restrictions around Palm Beach during presidential visits. According to NORAD data cited by WPTV and reported by EFE, over 60 aircraft have been intercepted since January 2025 for violating temporary flight restrictions in the area.

One recent incident occurred on October 24, when a NORAD F-16 fighter jet intercepted a civilian aircraft that entered the restricted airspace near Mar-a-Lago. The pilot received a warning and was instructed to leave the area. Temporary flight restrictions are imposed to protect specific zones during presidential movements. Violating pilots may face military interception and federal action.

Security Measures Amid Potential Trump Visit

The deployment aligns with preparations for Trump's potential arrival in Palm Beach for a Halloween event over the weekend. As reported by La Opinión Hispana, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established temporary airspace restrictions from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 1.

The same source noted that Palm Beach municipal authorities decided to close South Ocean Boulevard, between South County Road and Southern Boulevard, starting at 5:00 am on Friday, October 30, without initially announcing a reopening date. This measure could disrupt regular traffic for residents, workers, and visitors in this coastal region, especially those traveling to nearby businesses and properties.

The security apparatus around the presidential estate has been bolstered on several occasions following incidents at Trump's properties. In September 2024, authorities thwarted an assassination attempt against the then-Republican candidate at his golf club in West Palm Beach. More recently, in February 2026, Secret Service agents neutralized an armed man attempting to enter Mar-a-Lago. Trump was not present at the property during this incident.

Currently, NORAD and the Secret Service have not disclosed when the anti-aircraft systems around the presidential residence will be withdrawn.
