The Passing of Olga Navarro, "The Star of Verses," in Havana

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 by Grace Ramos

Olga Navarro Thauller, internationally celebrated as "The Star of Verses," passed away in Havana on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the age of 97, leaving a significant void in Cuban culture.

The announcement came from the Adolfo Guzmán Provincial Music Promotion Company, which hailed her as an "essential figure in national culture and a revered icon of television, poetry, and music in Cuba."

Born on December 3, 1928, in Cuba's capital, Navarro was a multifaceted artist: poet, reciter, actress, storyteller, composer, and show director.

Her career was marked by numerous milestones, yet she frequently emphasized her roles as a teacher and advertising model. She was a pioneer of Cuban Television, became the first woman to direct night shows in the nation at Las Vegas cabaret, and played a key role in founding the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).

In the late 1950s, she began performing her own poetry on the stages of Havana’s cabarets, accompanied by pianist and composer Frank Domínguez, during the vibrant rise of the Cuban "filin" movement.

Her poetic and musical creations crossed international boundaries. Songs like "I'm Standing Here" and "I Told You to Stay" were performed by notable artists such as Elena Burke, Omara Portuondo, and Rosita Fornés, remaining integral to the living repertoire of Cuban music.

She published her first poetry collection, "Verses," in 1957, followed by "To You" in 1958. The Show magazine named her Reciter of the Year in 1960 and 1961, and she enjoyed a flourishing international career with performances across the Americas and Europe.

In 2008, the UNEAC awarded her the Nicolás Guillén Diploma in recognition of her half-century of artistic contributions. She also received the Distinction for National Culture.

Navarro's passing comes during a particularly sorrowful year for Cuban culture, which also mourned the loss of actress Doris Gutiérrez in July and actress Paula Alí in August.
