The Cuban women's volleyball team now knows its competitors for the 2027 Women's Volleyball World Championship: Poland, Germany, and Slovenia. This lineup was determined by the FIVB's global draw held on Monday via a live stream.

These Caribbean athletes are part of Group E, which will play its group stage from August 20 to 25, 2027, at the Centre Bell in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This venue can accommodate nearly 21,000 spectators.

Ranked 26th in the FIVB world standings, Cuba faces opponents with higher rankings: Poland sits in fifth, Germany in twelfth, and Slovenia in eighteenth place.

The German Volleyball Federation described Group E as a "challenging group." Their head coach, Christian Dünnes, acknowledged Cuba's potential, stating, "The team has the potential to return to the world elite," as reported by the German federation on Monday.

The tournament will bring together 32 teams divided into eight groups of four, with matches spread across five cities in the United States and Canada.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16, where Group E will face one of the top two from Group D, which includes the United States, Thailand, Mexico, and Greece.

This competition holds significance beyond the championship itself: the top three teams that haven't yet secured a spot will earn a ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The final is scheduled for September 5, 2027, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, the same venue that will host Olympic volleyball in 2028.

Cuba earned its spot in the tournament by winning bronze at the 2026 Norceca Women's Continental Championship, where they defeated the Dominican Republic 3-0 last August.

This was the team's first continental medal in 15 years since securing bronze in 2011, marking a turning point in the recovery process for a team that finished 23rd in the 2025 World Championship.

Behind this resurgence is Brazilian coach Luizomar de Moura, who took over the helm in August 2025 as the first foreign coach to lead the Cuban women's team, with his salary covered by the FIVB.

Cuba's aspirations are backed by history: the "Caribbean Queens" have won three FIVB World Cup titles (1978, 1994, and 1998) and three consecutive Olympic gold medals (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, and Sydney 2000), although recent decades have seen more modest results.

This edition of the tournament marks the first FIVB Women's Volleyball World Cup held in North America, offering a unique opportunity for the large Cuban community residing in Canada to closely follow the team's matches in Montreal.
