Miami is bracing for an exceptionally busy year in the cruise industry, driven by the increasing enthusiasm of Americans for ocean travel. Experts predict a new record in passenger numbers by 2027, with southern Florida serving as a key departure point for Caribbean voyages.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) has forecasted that around 22.4 million U.S. residents will embark on ocean cruises in 2027. This represents a 3.6% increase compared to 2026 projections, marking the fifth consecutive year of record-breaking numbers in this tourism sector.

Florida's Ports Leading the Charge

While the forecast includes both domestic and international departures by Americans, not all passengers will start their journeys in Florida. Despite this, Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale consistently rank among the world's busiest cruise ports, according to AAA.

The industry's growth highlights a rebound that has surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 2023. In 2019, approximately 14.2 million Americans took ocean cruises, and by 2027, the figure is projected to be about 57% higher.

The Allure of Cruise Vacations

A major draw for cruising is the ability to visit multiple destinations without the hassle of changing hotels, offering a combination of accommodation, dining, and entertainment in one trip. "Cruises provide a unique vacation experience because you unpack just once and visit various destinations with meals and entertainment included," explained Stacey Barber, AAA Travel's Vice President.

Choosing the right ship and itinerary is crucial, as cruise lines offer vastly different experiences based on passengers' ages, preferences, and budgets.

Caribbean's Continued Popularity

The Caribbean remains a top choice, with 71% of U.S. cruise passengers opting for its beaches, island stops, and proximity to Florida ports. Cruise lines have responded by deploying larger ships with enhanced facilities and private destinations featuring beaches, eateries, pools, and other attractions.

Some mega-cruisers can accommodate at least 4,500 passengers and provide a wide range of activities even on sea days.

Local Advantages and Economic Impact

For Miami-Dade and Broward residents, the proximity of cruise terminals means starting vacations without the need for flights to other cities. This advantage, coupled with international demand, terminal investments, and expanded operations, has fueled growth at PortMiami, which surpassed 10 million cruise passenger movements in a single fiscal year for the first time in September.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava highlighted the port's importance to the local economy, tourism, and job creation. Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades also set records, closing the 2026 fiscal year with over 5.38 million cruise passenger movements, marking the third consecutive year of records for the Broward County terminal.

Changing Trends and Passenger Satisfaction

As demand grows, the length of cruises is evolving. Although seven-night voyages remain popular, more travelers are opting for shorter escapes. In 2025, 45% of American cruise passengers booked trips lasting six nights or fewer, compared to 39% in 2019.

These itineraries offer a brief getaway without lengthy absences from work, school, or family duties, with options including trips to the Bahamas and various Caribbean destinations.

Passenger satisfaction plays a significant role in cruise popularity. According to AAA, over 90% of U.S. passengers rate their cruise experiences as positive, and 93% rebook a cruise. However, AAA advises travelers to compare services carefully, as some amenities may incur additional charges.

Preparing for Future Growth

To accommodate increasing numbers, Miami has been enhancing ground access to the port. On October 16, PortMiami unveiled new measures to ease traffic congestion for the 2026-2027 season, including guidance for terminal entry routes, campaigns encouraging timely passenger arrivals, and technology to pinpoint potential congestion.

A free shuttle service to Miami International Airport will be tested for select dates for Carnival Celebration passengers, with similar initiatives for Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas guests continuing.

PortMiami's 2026-2027 lineup features new ships from Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Silversea, and other international operators. The Carnival Firenze is expected to arrive in February 2027, with the Norwegian Aura joining in June and the Royal Caribbean Hero of the Seas in August.
