A tragic accident on the Varadero highway, near the Carbonera area in Cárdenas, Matanzas, has resulted in the death of one person and injuries to 29 others. This incident occurred on Friday and has left the community in shock.
According to Yamira López García, the provincial health director, the fatality was confirmed at the scene, as reported by the Cuban News Agency. This update revises the initial report which initially recorded 22 injuries with no fatalities.
Out of the 29 individuals injured, five are in critical condition and classified as code red. Meanwhile, two children have been transported to the Provincial Pediatric Hospital with less severe injuries.
Medical Response and Treatment
The "Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy" Provincial Military Teaching Hospital received 22 patients. Dr. Humberto Domínguez Suárez, the hospital's assistant director, provided insights into the medical situation, as shared with Periódico Girón. "We received 22 patients: 21 adults and one child who is under observation without serious injuries. Among the adults, there are four with neurosurgical trauma and two with cervical injuries. They will all be transferred to the Faustino Pérez Hospital for CT scans and evaluation by a neurosurgeon, services unavailable here," he explained.
In addition to these cases, two patients with facial trauma were also directed to the same center, the only one in the province equipped with tomography and neurosurgery facilities. A seventh patient, suffering from renal trauma, underwent emergency surgery at the Military Hospital and is being assessed for potential spinal cord injuries.
Dr. Domínguez Suárez assured that, aside from the patient undergoing surgery, the remaining injured individuals, who mostly sustained limb and clavicle fractures along with some thoracic injuries, are out of immediate danger.
Community's Role in the Aftermath
Witnesses have linked the accident to a mechanical failure. "The truck's steering broke and hit a sign. Local residents helped rescue the injured," a resident from Carbonera shared on social media. Due to delays in ambulance arrivals, locals and private drivers took it upon themselves to assist and transport the victims.
Doctors reassured families that the situation was under control: "Everything necessary to care for the patients is available. Both the provincial health director and the provincial deputy director of medical assistance have been actively supporting our efforts from the start."
Alarming Increase in Road Incidents
This accident highlights the rising road accident rates in Cuba. The National Commission of Road Safety reported 750 fatalities in traffic accidents in 2025, marking an 18.2% increase compared to the previous year, with more than 7,500 accidents recorded. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, 153 deaths have already been reported.
Recent similar accidents include a Viazul bus collision with a truck in Camagüey earlier this month, resulting in one death and eight injuries, and a passenger-adapted truck overturning in Quemado de Güines in May, which caused two deaths and 13 injuries. The widespread deterioration of Cuban vehicles and the adaptation of cargo trucks for passenger transport are significant contributors to these dangerous trends.
