A tragic case of femicide has been confirmed in Cuba by the Alas Tensas Gender Observatory (OGAT). Ana Vivian Suárez Cruz, a 21-year-old from La Palma, Pinar del Río, lost her life on August 13 under circumstances initially described on social media as mysterious.

According to a post on Facebook, local sources have verified that Ana Vivian's former partner is already in custody, facing legal proceedings. Eyewitnesses reportedly observed this individual participating in a recent police reconstruction of the events.

The OGAT organization has raised concerns about the potential involvement of another individual in the crime and highlighted a disturbing trend where perpetrators stage suicides to avoid capture. The alleged assailant, whose identity remains undisclosed, has a history of violence against women.

OGAT portrayed Ana Vivian as "a hardworking and happy young woman" and expressed their condolences to her mother and brother.

With this incident, OGAT has documented 59 femicides in Cuba for 2026, surpassing the 49 cases recorded for the entire year of 2025. This marks 2026 as one of the deadliest years since the observatory began its monitoring in 2019.

Pinar del Río alone has witnessed four confirmed femicides this year. Additionally, OGAT notes 38 femicide attempts and two murders of men in the context of gender-based violence during 2026. They are currently investigating 11 possible femicides and 16 reported attempts that await verification. The case of Bárbara Sánchez González is also being monitored as a potential femicide suicide.

It is important to note that Cuba's legal system does not recognize femicide as a distinct offense within its Penal Code. In 2022, the National Assembly rejected an amendment to include it, and the government does not release official statistics on these crimes.
