The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office has sparked a debate by purchasing 1,000 cowboy hats at a price of $132 each, totaling $132,000. This decision has led to divided opinions among county residents, raising questions about the use of taxpayer money.

The acquisition was revealed on October 18 through an Instagram video featuring several officers passing the hat around, with Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz making an appearance at the end. "We've always worn a badge. Now, we're adding the sheriff's style," commented Cordero-Stutz in the video.

In an official statement, the sheriff's office justified the purchase: "The cowboy hat is an optional addition to our officers’ authorized uniform, not a new budget item. It is funded with already allocated uniform budget resources."

Officers are not required to wear them; they can choose the standard cap or opt for no hat at all.

Stedman Stahl, the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, supported the purchase, framing it as part of the agency's rebranding strategy, according to CBS News. "This is all about rebranding," stated Stahl, highlighting the practical benefits of the wider brim over a conventional baseball cap: "Your ears and neck will get sunburned. This provides much more protection."

However, several residents have questioned the expenditure. Eliseo Abreus, a county resident for over twenty years, expressed his disappointment: "My salary, our taxes, and as a resident of more than 20 years, I am very disappointed." Others, such as Francisco Agusto and Odely Deloro, deemed the expense unnecessary, while James Roberts suggested the money could be used to assist the homeless.

Not all feedback was negative. Beatriz Morejon Paniaga, speaking in Spanish, acknowledged the cost was questionable but thought it was a good idea if the hats offered sun protection to officers.

On social media, users humorously noted that Miami-Dade seemed to be adopting a style more characteristic of Texas or Oklahoma than South Florida.

Sheriff Cordero-Stutz defended the decision by pointing out prior uniform decisions that resulted in significant savings: choosing to keep the brown uniforms of the former Miami-Dade Police Department avoided a cost of approximately $4.8 million.

The institutional context adds weight to the debate. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office has been formally in existence since January 2025, with Cordero-Stutz serving as the first elected sheriff in nearly sixty years, replacing the former police department.

The full transition, which includes vehicles, buildings, uniforms, and signage, is estimated to take about three years, and the hats are part of that process of establishing a new identity.

This controversy arises amid an ongoing budget dispute between Sheriff Cordero-Stutz and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Cordero-Stutz is seeking an additional $42 million for the fiscal year 2026-2027, while the mayor asserts that the approved $1.2 billion budget is the largest in the county's public safety history.

Cordero-Stutz has announced plans to appeal the budget decision to Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida cabinet, making every spending decision by the office a subject of public scrutiny.
