In a tragic event in Guyana, 37-year-old Cuban national Lázaro Yasmany Izquierdo Duarte lost his life after being stabbed on Tuesday night. Authorities have detained another Cuban, aged 38, who is suspected of being involved in the incident.
The tragic incident took place around 9:45 p.m. on October 20th in a two-story building located in Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara. Both men were reportedly sharing a room in this building, as detailed by Guyanese news outlet News Room, citing a police report.
Initial investigations reveal that another resident heard a loud commotion and went to investigate. In the hallway, they found Duarte lying in a pool of blood, suffering from multiple injuries that appeared to be inflicted by a blade.
Beside him stood the other Cuban man, who, according to the authorities' account, was found holding a knife.
Officers arrived to find Duarte unconscious and rushed him to Diamond Regional Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by a doctor at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21st.
The deceased’s body was transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits an autopsy.
The suspect has been taken to Golden Grove police station, where he is currently detained as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crime. As of now, the motive behind the incident remains unclear.
Repeat Stabbings Raise Alarm in Cuban Community
This incident comes on the heels of another fatal stabbing of a Cuban in the same East Bank Demerara area less than a month ago. On September 26th, 37-year-old Luis Ángel Rodríguez Guillén was killed during an altercation with a fellow Cuban at a shipyard in Land of Canaan. Both worked and lived there, and a 32-year-old suspect was apprehended.
In July, the community was also shaken by the death of 20-year-old Yudivian Cárdenas Amador Almagro in Diamond. Three Cubans were subsequently arrested and held in custody in connection with that homicide.
The rising violence has sparked concern among the Cuban expatriate community in the South American nation. In August, a Cuban living in Guyana reported multiple instances of thefts and assaults targeting Cubans, expressing that these migrants from the island have become "prime targets for crime."
