William González, a 67-year-old resident from southwest Miami-Dade, was taken into custody on Wednesday. He faces accusations of assaulting another gym-goer with a dumbbell during a dispute at an LA Fitness in Miami, as reported by local media outlets.

The altercation took place around 8:20 PM at the facility located at 9291 West Flagler Street in Miami-Dade County, according to the arrest report from the Sheriff's Office.

The Dispute and Assault

The incident unfolded when González and the victim, identified as Arman Murant, crossed paths near the weight rack and engaged in a heated exchange over equipment usage.

Murant informed investigators that González picked up a dumbbell with his right hand and hurled it at him.

Despite Murant raising his left forearm in defense, he sustained blows to both his arm and the left side of his head.

When officers arrived, they documented "visible bruises and a lump" on the victim's left side of the head, along with a scratch on the left forearm, injuries that corroborated Murant's account.

Accused's Version and Witness Testimony

González admitted to having an argument with Murant but denied striking him with the dumbbell.

The accused claimed he only lifted the weight to intimidate Murant into backing off, not to inflict harm.

However, a gym employee provided a conflicting narrative: although she did not witness the actual assault, she did observe González chasing Murant around the premises as he attempted to flee, as noted in the arrest report.

A gym-goer interviewed by Telemundo 51 expressed shock at the event: "Never. I've never seen such aggression in fitness gyms."

Another frequent visitor reflected on the issue's root: "I've seen so many problems in gyms over waiting for weights, waiting for a machine. People need to have a bit more patience."

Arrest and Charges

González was initially transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, the primary intake facility for Miami-Dade's jail system.

He is facing a charge of aggravated assault, which in Florida can lead to penalties of up to 15 years in prison when committed with a blunt object capable of causing serious bodily harm.

As of Thursday's reports, he remained detained at the Metrowest Detention Center with bail set at $5,000.

The nationality of the accused has not been disclosed, nor has there been any information regarding legal representation for either party.

Preventive Tips for Gym Incidents

In its coverage, Telemundo 51 included several recommendations to prevent similar incidents: ask before using equipment another person is employing, respect turns and gym rules, and avoid insults and physical confrontation.

The outlet also reminded readers that in the face of any threat or aggression, the prudent action is to distance oneself and contact 911.

The charge of aggravated assault is a formal accusation, not a conviction, and González is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
