The province of Matanzas is experiencing a continuous increase in patients with fever linked to the spread of arboviruses. Although this situation affects the entire province, five specific municipalities bear the brunt of the cases.

The most impacted areas include Cárdenas, Pedro Betancourt, Los Arabos, Ciénaga de Zapata, and Matanzas itself, according to the state-run TV Yumurí. This report highlighted that no municipality in Matanzas is untouched by the current epidemiological situation.

Health Authorities Urge Vigilance

Health officials have characterized this increase as a "typical situation for this time of year," noting that October and November often see a rise in mosquito-related diseases. They have emphasized the need to bolster preventive measures, particularly for high-risk groups who may suffer complications.

"Attention should be focused on the most vulnerable individuals, as they are more likely to experience complications due to comorbidities, advanced age, or pregnancy," authorities stated.

Sanitation Efforts and Community Actions

Sanitation work continues in workplaces, where there is a strong push to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds. Families are also urged to engage in self-inspection practices, checking and removing containers that collect water both inside and around their homes.

On October 13, Anaelis Santana Álvarez, director of the Provincial Pediatric Hospital Eliseo Noel Caamaño, refuted claims that the hospital was overwhelmed and dismissed the notion of an epidemic situation. However, she acknowledged the active circulation of arboviruses along with approximately 20 respiratory viruses.

At that time, the hospital was operating 178 out of its 209 beds, with an occupancy rate below 90%.

Nationwide Dengue Concerns

Matanzas's situation reflects a broader national trend marked by an increase in mosquito-borne diseases. According to the Global Dengue Observatory, Cuba had recorded around 11,235 dengue cases by October 4, 2026. This figure is 9.2 times higher than the country's historical average over the past five years.

The concurrent circulation of all four dengue serotypes in Cuba, with a predominance of serotype 2, further complicates the public health scenario. As confirmed in late September by Deputy Minister of Public Health Carilda Peña, this situation poses additional health risks. Individuals previously infected with one serotype may face a higher risk of severe illness if they contract a different serotype later on.
