Former President Bill Clinton is set to travel to Florida next week to rally support for Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly. This marks Clinton's initial public engagement for the 2026 midterm elections.

On Tuesday, October 20, Clinton will join Jolly at an evening interfaith event in Hollywood, Florida. The timing is crucial, as it coincides with the start of early voting in several parts of the state, just two weeks ahead of Election Day.

This strategic visit underscores the Democrats' bid to reclaim a governorship that has been under Republican control since 1999. The last Democratic victory in this race was with Lawton Chiles in 1994.

Jolly, formerly a Republican congressman, officially switched parties and registered as a Democrat in April 2025. He secured the Democratic primary with 61% of the vote, positioning himself as a candidate who can appeal to independents and disaffected Republicans alike.

Clinton's Role in a Tight Race

Jolly's opponent is Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, who has the endorsement of President Donald Trump. If elected, Donalds would make history as Florida's first African American governor and the first African American Republican to hold the position nationwide.

Polls indicate a competitive race with a slight Republican edge. A Stetson University poll shows Donalds leading with 52% compared to Jolly's 41%. However, Change Research reports a dead heat at 47%, and St. Pete Polls reflects a virtual tie.

Financial Challenges and Strategic Alliances

Jolly faces a significant financial hurdle, with Donalds and his committees having raised $134.4 million by the end of September, overshadowing Jolly's $16.7 million.

Clinton isn't the only prominent Democrat descending on Florida in these crucial weeks. Senator Bernie Sanders is scheduled to campaign with Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon over the weekend. Meanwhile, Senators Chris Murphy and Ruben Gallego have already joined Nixon in Orlando for campaign events.

Recently, Clinton also partnered with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for a fundraising event in New York, supporting Representative Jared Moskowitz in a highly contested district.

On the Republican front, Vice President JD Vance visited Lakeland earlier in October to back Donalds and Senator Ashley Moody.

Bethany Conrad, a professor at Florida Gulf Coast University, highlighted the significance of these high-profile visits: "These figures carry significant name recognition, particularly among party loyalists who are certain to vote. Their presence can lend credibility to these campaigns."

Early voting in Florida is set to commence on October 19, with Election Day scheduled for November 3, 2026.
