Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has taken a bold step in the diplomatic standoff with Moscow by proposing that if Russia agrees to a complete 60-day ceasefire, Ukraine will proceed with presidential elections.

In a statement made during an interview with ABC News, Zelensky directly addressed the demands of U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently suggested a change in leadership in Kyiv.

Zelensky's Strategic Proposal

This move places the onus on Vladimir Putin. Should the Kremlin decline the ceasefire, it would be perceived as obstructing Ukrainian voters. Conversely, accepting it would afford Ukraine two months of peace.

"Let Putin know that if he gives us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, we will organize elections. Naturally, we are prepared for any election chosen by the Ukrainian people," the president stated.

Tensions and International Reactions

The backdrop of this proposal is a week marked by heightened tensions. On October 10th, Trump declared that "it's time for a new president in Ukraine," accusing Zelensky of prolonging the conflict by authorizing Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries.

Trump had previously announced a deal with Putin to release over 300,000 metric tons of Russian diesel to the global market, with a Treasury Department license suspending sanctions until April 2027. Zelensky criticized this agreement as a "birthday gift for Putin," warning that the revenues would fund the war effort.

Despite Trump's announcement of an "energy ceasefire" between the nations, Russia did not officially confirm it and continued attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure that same night. Zelensky condemned these attacks as a blatant violation of the truce proclaimed by Washington.

Legal Hurdles and National Sovereignty

In his ABC interview, Zelensky highlighted the legal challenges of holding elections during wartime: "Conducting elections now is truly difficult. Not only due to a lack of security but also because it contravenes our law and Constitution."

The martial law in place since the Russian invasion in February 2022 explicitly prohibits national elections. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian president made the offer, emphasizing that the choice of the country's leadership should not be dictated by foreign governments: "With all due respect to President Trump, it is up to our society, our people, to choose their leader."

Zelensky also disclosed that he had previously discussed the 60-day proposal with Trump's team, noting that both Putin and the U.S. president have shown interest in political change in Kyiv. "I am aware that Putin was very keen to change Ukraine's president. I understand this," he remarked before publicly setting forth his condition.

Kremlin's Rejection

The Kremlin officially dismissed the proposal on Monday. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the 60-day ceasefire, claiming that Russia seeks "long-term peace" rather than a temporary pause, offering only to refrain from attacking Ukraine on the actual day of elections.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was more forthright: "Zelensky does not deserve any respite. Moscow will not trust guarantees and promises again."
