Today, October 13th, Cuban-born captain Yusiel López Insúa will learn his fate in a Miami court regarding a tragic boating accident in 2025 that led to the deaths of three young girls during a summer camp.

López Insúa admitted guilt in July to charges of maritime involuntary manslaughter, a federal offense that could result in up to a decade behind bars. However, an agreement was reached between the prosecution and defense, with the support of the victims' families, recommending a significantly reduced sentence.

According to NBC Miami, both parties have suggested a sentence of one year and one day in prison, followed by six months of home confinement. CBS Miami characterized this recommendation as a year of incarceration and six months of supervised release. Ultimately, it is up to the federal judge to decide whether to accept this proposed sentence.

The accident took place on July 28, 2025, in Biscayne Bay when López Insúa's tugboat, pushing a barge laden with construction materials, collided with a small sailboat carrying five girls and an instructor.

The victims were identified as Mila Yankelevich, seven years old; Arielle Buchman, ten; and Erin Ko Han, aged 13. The three girls tragically drowned after becoming trapped beneath the vessel. The other two young girls and their instructor survived the incident.

A federal investigation uncovered severe breaches of maritime safety regulations. The captain's view was obstructed by the barge's structures, including a crane, and no crew member was designated to keep watch for other vessels.

Furthermore, a forensic examination of his cellphone revealed internet activity during the voyage, including around the time of the collision.

By pleading guilty on July 21, López Insúa avoided a trial. His lawyer, Walter Reynoso, stated that his client was deeply remorseful and did not wish to force the families to relive the tragedy through a court process.

The U.S. Department of Justice described the incident as a preventable tragedy, stemming from the failure to adhere to fundamental safety measures.
