On Monday, Donald Trump declared his belief that neither China nor Russia is aiding Iran in any significant way, dismissing claims to the contrary as the work of "radical left-wing lunatics and idiots." These accusations suggest that both global powers are bolstering Tehran amid the armed conflict between the United States and the Islamic Republic, which has been ongoing since February this year.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump asserted, "If they are providing assistance, it is minimal, but I doubt they are involved at all. They have too much at stake, and we'd find out very quickly." This stance sharply contrasts with intelligence reports and testimonies from his own administration officials in Congress.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged in a July Senate hearing that the reality is different. "There are ways in which both countries are, to varying degrees, enabling some of Iran's activities," Hegseth stated, referring to a video of the hearing circulating on social media. He further mentioned that the "depth and scope" of this support "should remain classified."

Credible media outlets echo Hegseth's perspective. A Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that China provided Iran with components for drones and missiles. Chinese entities also supplied satellite imagery of the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, which Tehran used for a strike on July 17, 2026, resulting in the deaths of three American soldiers.

Similarly, The Washington Post reported in March that Russia shared intelligence with Iran on the positions of U.S. warships and aircraft to facilitate assaults against American forces in the region.

The Trump administration itself has taken actions that contradict the president's public statements. On October 8, just four days before Trump's Truth Social post, the Treasury Department sanctioned Chinese and Hong Kong entities for facilitating financial transactions and arms acquisitions that benefited the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Since the conflict's onset on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched "Operation Epic Fury" against Iranian military and nuclear sites, Trump has attempted to keep Beijing and Moscow out of the fray.

During Xi Jinping's visit to Washington in September, Trump directly cautioned against providing support to Iran. According to the U.S. ambassador to China, Trump received assurances from Xi that Beijing would refrain. "He assured me in a beautiful letter that China is not sending weapons to Iran," Trump said of Xi.

However, a Reuters report from late July disclosed that China agreed to sell between 300 and 400 portable anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran for $60 to $70 million, with shipments planned via Pakistan.

Both Moscow and Beijing maintain close ties with Tehran: Russia has warned that the war could trigger a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, while China has condemned U.S. attacks on Iran as "a blatant violation of Iranian sovereignty."

General Caine, who appeared alongside Hegseth in the July Congressional session, chose not to divulge specifics: "I prefer not to comment on the details because that would reveal what we know. And I never want the adversary to know what I know."
