The Pinar del Río University "Hermanos Saíz Montes de Oca" (UPR) has announced the passing of Engineer Elio Antonio Govea Rodríguez, an Associate Professor and a foundational figure in the Industrial Engineering program in the province. This sad news was shared in a condolence note on the university's Facebook page.
"Elio Govea was a person of integrity and a cornerstone in the history of our institution," the university emphasized.
Govea dedicated over 20 years to academia at UPR, with 14 of those years actively engaged in teaching. He was instrumental in establishing the Industrial Engineering program in Pinar del Río and served as its first Head of the Academic Department. This achievement was crucial, allowing countless young people from Pinar del Río to pursue this specialty.
Throughout his career, Govea held nearly every significant position in the university hierarchy, including Head of the Degree Program, Course Coordinator, Vice Dean, Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Director of Human Resources at UPR.
In his role as Director of Human Resources, he was noted for "his humane approach, work ethic, and constant concern for the well-being of both staff and students."
More recently, Govea was working as a methodology specialist focusing on Foreign Investment Business in the Export Department of the Ministry of Higher Education.
The news of his passing also deeply affected the professional community in Pinar del Río. Writer and journalist Jesús Arencibia Lorenzo, who considered Govea a personal friend, confirmed on social media that he died in a traffic accident.
"If there was someone from our generation in Pinar del Río who embodied talent without pretense, unwavering cheerfulness, and the ability to give to others as naturally as breathing, it was my friend Elio Antonio Govea Rodríguez," Arencibia Lorenzo wrote.
Govea's death adds to a sorrowful year for UPR, which also mourned the loss of Professor Mayra Carmona González, a Doctor of Economic Sciences and former dean of the same faculty, in May 2026.
