Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, Dariel Fernández, has called for a federal investigation into the alleged connections between Danny Valdez, a political aide to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and representatives of the Cuban regime. The request follows revelations of Valdez's trip to Havana, where he reportedly met with Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Fernández has urged the U.S. Departments of Justice and Treasury to scrutinize Valdez's activities to determine if any federal laws were violated during his interactions with Cuban officials. This was articulated in a statement released on his X account, as reported by Florida's Voice.

"United States national security is not negotiable," declared the Cuban-American official. He expressed concerns over Valdez's interactions with Havana authorities and his involvement in politically related activities concerning Cuba.

Concerns Over International Political Activities

The call for investigation comes after the New York Post disclosed that Valdez traveled to Cuba from October 22 to 26, 2023, as part of a delegation from the International Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The group held meetings with high-ranking Cuban government officials, including Díaz-Canel.

The journalistic investigation relied on a travel diary that Valdez published in November 2023, which he later removed from the internet. The document outlined the delegation's political meetings and the conditions experienced during their stay on the island.

Allegations of Influence and Legal Implications

According to the report, Valdez perceived the meeting with Díaz-Canel as a success for his organization, interpreting that Cuban authorities viewed DSA as a potential ally in efforts to lift the U.S. embargo.

Fernández questioned the circumstances surrounding these interactions, raising several questions: "Who authorized these meetings? What commitments, if any, were made? Was there coordination with representatives of Cuba's communist-socialist dictatorship? What influence did these individuals have on U.S. elected officials?"

The tax collector specifically requested that federal authorities assess whether any activities might fall under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), which mandates registration and disclosure for certain individuals acting on behalf of foreign interests in the U.S.

Scrutiny of Legal Compliance

He also called for a review of whether the 2023 trip complied with U.S. sanctions and regulations regarding travel and transactions related to Cuba, under the oversight of the Treasury Department.

This petition does not imply that Valdez has committed any violations or that a federal investigation is underway. Fernández seeks a factual determination by authorities to decide if any action is warranted.

Another point raised by Fernández is Valdez's relationship with New York's mayor. Reports indicate that Valdez organized a fundraising event for Mamdani's 2025 campaign and claimed to have advised him on issues related to Cuba.

The Miami-Dade official demanded that Mamdani clarify Valdez's role in the campaign and any ongoing relationship with his administration.

"Mamdani owes transparency to the American people regarding Valdez's role in his campaign and any ties to his administration. Federal authorities must clarify the facts and determine if any laws were broken," Fernández stated.

Controversy Over Delegation's Privileges

The controversy erupted after the New York Post detailed Valdez's diary, including his meetings with Cuban authorities and the luxuries enjoyed by the delegation during their stay in Havana.

The visitors lodged at the five-star Grand Aston Havana Hotel and dined at exclusive restaurants. Valdez acknowledged in his writings the stark contrast between these conditions and the economic hardships faced by many Cubans.

Fernández criticized this disparity, recalling Cuba's poverty conditions. He cited a study by the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights estimating that 94% of the Cuban population lives in extreme poverty.

"While these individuals enjoyed luxury hotels, pools, drinks, and expensive restaurants, millions of Cubans struggled to survive under a murderous communist-socialist dictatorship that has denied its people freedom, basic human rights, and economic opportunities for generations," he expressed.

Referencing his experience as a Cuban emigrant, Fernández vowed not to remain silent against potential attempts by Havana's regime to influence U.S. institutions.

"I came to this great nation for the freedom that Cuba's murderous communist-socialist dictatorship denied my family and millions of others," he declared.

Fernández concluded that Miami-Dade should not become a haven for those violating U.S. laws by acting on behalf of the Cuban government.

"We stand with the Cuban people, with freedom, and with the United States of America," he affirmed.

The controversy indirectly involves Zohran Mamdani, who took office as New York's mayor in January 2026 after a campaign centered on affordable housing, public transportation, and social policies.
