Cuban Travelers Face Chaos and Frustration Over Air China Flight Cancellations

Monday, October 12, 2026 by Isabella Rojas

Continuing flight cancellations by Air China on the route between Madrid and Havana have sparked outrage among Cuban passengers. Many are speaking out about enduring lengthy waits at airports, unexpected hotel stays, unforeseen costs, and a lack of clear information about when they will be able to travel.

A flood of complaints has emerged on social media, with some passengers reporting waits of up to 17 hours for a resolution, while others were informed of cancellations just days before their scheduled departures.

Endless Airport Ordeals and Uncertainty

One passenger took to Facebook to describe her ordeal: "We spent 16 or 17 hours stranded there with no information," she said, detailing how her group spent almost an entire day at Madrid's airport before being relocated to a hotel in Alicante.

According to her account, at around 11:00 p.m., they were told they would be accommodated in a hotel, which they reached by 6:00 a.m. However, by 12:30 p.m., they were instructed to vacate the rooms and return to Madrid airport.

Expressing her frustration, she mentioned, "They tell us nothing," and also questioned the validity of a potential 600 euro compensation they had been informed about.

Struggles of Cuban Families and Elderly Travelers

Among the complaints was Laura Díaz's, a Cuban woman who posted a video on Instagram after learning her mother's flight, scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, was canceled.

"My mom was supposed to fly on Wednesday, a flight booked a month and a half ago, and today they emailed her saying it was canceled," Díaz explained. Her mother had paid 1,200 euros for a ticket that included three pieces of luggage, yet the notification lacked clear explanations or a contact number for further information.

Díaz was told that the next available flight could take up to 15 days. "Fifteen days? I booked a flight, it's expensive, and I'm only in Cuba for a month, so I lose my vacation time," she lamented.

She also shared that friends had faced similar issues two weeks prior, receiving cancellation notices just a day before their flight, forcing them to cover accommodation costs in Madrid themselves.

Ongoing Frustrations and Employment Concerns

The complaints against Air China date back to September. A review on Tripadvisor by Cándido Arias Pompa recounted how during a family trip from Madrid to Havana, the airline left his luggage in Spain, causing him to spend a week in Cuba without his belongings. He reported spending 100 euros on transport to retrieve his luggage without any compensation.

Arias also noted that the return flight, initially set for September 20, was rescheduled without notice. "There was a lack of information at Havana airport; nobody offered logical explanations or feasible solutions to affected travelers," he said.

In the Facebook group "Cubans in Madrid," other users have reported cancellations without clear alternatives. One passenger, who went to Madrid-Barajas airport on October 11, was told that issues with the runway repairs at Nassau airport in the Bahamas were preventing Chinese planes from landing.

He was offered a full refund and the possibility to claim 600 euros in compensation, but no concrete travel date was provided.

Another user warned of numerous travelers stranded in Cuba, some of whom have lost their jobs in Spain due to not being able to return as planned.

The travel agency Samy Voyages alerted on October 3 about the cancellation or modification of flight CA865 scheduled for that day, mentioning that many passengers arrived at the airport without prior notification.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Cuba recently acknowledged the frequent changes and temporary cancellations of flights CA865 and CA866 due to "technical reasons."

The affected passengers' testimonies highlight growing concerns over additional expenses, uncertainty about new travel dates, and difficulties in receiving assistance.
