On Saturday, Spain triumphed over Italy with a 5-2 victory at the Carlos Pérez de Rozas Municipal Baseball Field in Barcelona, clinching their spot in the Premier 12 tournament for 2027. This achievement was significantly aided by the pivotal contributions of several Cuban-origin players who are part of the Spanish roster.

Félix Stevens Cañizares emerged as the standout hitter of the game, driving in three of Spain's five runs. Meanwhile, the Hernández brothers, Frank and Omar, each had multiple hits, showcasing their offensive prowess. On the pitching side, Royd Hernández and Carlos Sierra each took the mound for an inning, maintaining their team's lead.

This victory occurred during the European Qualifier for the 2027 Premier 12, held from Friday through Sunday in Barcelona. Competing in a round-robin format, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Colombia vied for the two available berths in the tournament.

Despite entering the tournament as the lowest-ranked team in the group, positioned 26th in the WBSC rankings behind Colombia (13), Italy (14), and Germany (17), Spain defied expectations. They finished the qualifier unbeaten, securing a 2-0 record after also defeating Germany 3-2 on Friday, thus claiming the top spot in the group.

Sports journalist Francys Romero highlighted on social media that this was a "significant victory for Spain, especially after they narrowly missed qualifying for the World Baseball Classic in February 2025."

The success of the Spanish team can be attributed to their strategic inclusion of emigrant talent from Cuba. The Spanish federation called up nine Cuban players for the qualifier, marking the highest number of Cuban-origin players in a Spanish national team to date, surpassing the six involved in the 2025 World Baseball Classic qualifier.

In addition to those already mentioned, the roster featured pitchers Elián Leyva, Pablo Luis Guillén, Rubén Menes, and Dayán González, as well as Cuban coach Néstor Pérez. Team captain Omar Hernández, born in Havana in 2001, moved to Spain with his twin brother Frank in 2013. By 2018, he became the first player from Club Béisbol Viladecans to sign with a Major League Baseball franchise, the Kansas City Royals.

This approach had previously paid off during the 2023 European Championship in the Czech Republic, where Spain secured its first continental title in 68 years. Cuban players, including Pablo Luis Guillén, Carlos Sierra, and Omar Hernández, who led the tournament in home runs and runs scored with an OPS of 1.397, were instrumental in this success.

Italy also secured their qualification by defeating Germany 5-0 on Sunday, marking their return to the Premier 12 for the first time since 2015.

The Premier 12 in 2027 will be the first expanded edition featuring 16 teams and will have direct Olympic implications. It will grant a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to the best-performing team from Europe or Oceania. Cuba, which has direct entry into the competition due to its WBSC ranking, may face several former Cuban players now representing Spain.
