Leo Fernández Cruz, a Cuban activist aged 45, tragically lost his life after being hit by a truck on Vía Blanca, near the Ñico López refinery in Havana. His untimely death has sparked an outpouring of grief among friends, writers, and those involved in civic activism across Cuba.

Reports from Nio Reportando un Crimen and the independent outlet ClickCuba stated that the accident occurred on Saturday, October 10, identifying Fernández Cruz as a resident of Guanabacoa. As of now, official details about the circumstances of the accident or any accountability have not been released.

A Voice of Opposition Silenced

Fernández Cruz was well-regarded for his outspoken criticism of the Cuban government and for his connections with the opposition and independent civil society. His passing has prompted heartfelt farewells from those who knew him.

Art historian, filmmaker, and independent journalist Boris González Arenas expressed his sorrow, sharing a photo with Fernández Cruz and other friends, writing, "Leo Fernández Cruz, my friend, rest in peace. Sending a hug." Similarly, Ricardo López Drago mourned the loss of a close friend, reminiscing with a quote by José Martí: "There is only one thing comparable to the pleasure of finding a friend; the sorrow of losing one."

Remembering a Passionate Advocate

Cuban producer Dayana Prieto, currently living in Spain, regretted not having purchased Fernández Cruz's book, *Raspadura*, and not fulfilling her promise to publish a final collection of his poetry. She confessed, "I have a list of things pending, and it terrifies me whenever I am late for some of them."

Juan Carlos Suárez Pena paid tribute to Fernández Cruz for his friendship, artistic sensitivity, and unwavering beliefs. He lamented, "Damn Leo... I'll miss you. If anyone deserved to see a free Cuba... it was you."

Meanwhile, Many López highlighted Fernández Cruz's dedication to Cuba's future, writing, "Your legacy of struggle, dignity, and love for your people lives in every corner of our hope."

A Life of Defiance

Journalist Luz Escobar, a friend since their teenage years, remembered him as "a rebel until the end and an incorrigible dissident who never bowed his head." Close friend and activist Lara Crofs also celebrated his life as a poet and musicologist, noting his rebellious nature and political convictions. She described him as "a free spirit, one who speaks his mind without asking for permission or forgiveness."

Crofs also recounted witnessing the harassment Fernández Cruz endured from Cuban State Security over the years.

His wife, Annalie López, bid farewell with loving words and alluded to his dream of seeing a free Cuba.

Fernández Cruz had vocally criticized the conditions of Cuban political prisoners. In June, following a visit to the Combinado del Este, he reported the harsh conditions as described by several prisoners involved in the July 11, 2021 protests. His account, shared by professor and activist Alina Bárbara López Hernández, detailed poor nutrition, bedbug-infested mattresses, and forced labor under the sun.

Beyond his activism, Fernández Cruz's literary work, *Raspadura*, remains cherished by many who knew him.
