In anticipation of Hurricane Isaias, police officers and rescue teams from Miami-Dade have been dispatched to Florida's Panhandle to bolster emergency response efforts.
Early Thursday morning, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook that a contingent of officers and supervisors set out at 4:00 a.m. for the northern part of the state.
This operation is in coordination with the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, who were also deployed to assist communities potentially impacted by the storm.
"When our fellow Floridians are in need, we answer the call," the sheriff's office stated while announcing the deployment.
With a state of emergency declared, the institution emphasized that their personnel are heading to the Panhandle to provide essential support "wherever needed" and to strengthen the response to any damage caused by Isaias.
"Our dedication to serve and protect extends far beyond Miami-Dade County. In times of uncertainty, we stand united as one Florida," the agency added.
This operation highlights how emergency resources from South Florida are being redirected to areas likely to experience the brunt of the hurricane, with personnel ready for rescue operations, assistance, and immediate response.
The mobilization occurs as conditions related to Isaias began affecting the northern Gulf Coast.
As of 2:00 p.m. Miami time, the cyclone's center was approximately 235 kilometers south of Pensacola, with tropical storm-force winds extending up to 335 kilometers from the center.
On Friday, Isaias intensified into a category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h, becoming a major hurricane as it approached the northern Gulf Coast.
The National Hurricane Center forecasts that the cyclone will make landfall late Friday afternoon or evening in the far western part of Florida's northwest, with major hurricane strength or close to it.
The primary threats include destructive winds, storm surges, heavy rainfall, flooding, and the risk of tornadoes in parts of the Panhandle, Alabama, and Georgia.
The NHC predicts a maximum storm surge of 1.8 to 2.7 meters between the Alabama-Florida border and Grayton Beach if the peak surge coincides with high tide.
Authorities have urged residents to complete preparations and adhere to evacuation orders in threatened areas, given the potential for severe damage and prolonged power outages during the hurricane's passage.
