Anthony Echemendía's Journey: How an American Family Changed the Life of a Cuban Wrestler in Nebraska

Friday, October 9, 2026 by Richard Morales

Anthony Echemendía, a Cuban wrestler representing the University of Nebraska, recently shared a heartfelt story on social media that has touched the hearts of thousands. He recounted how an American couple took him in during a time when he was homeless, penniless, and uncertain about his future.

In an emotional video on his Instagram account, @un_luchador_cubano_en_nebraska, Echemendía introduces Scott and Kathy as his "American parents," the individuals who transformed his life when he needed it the most.

"When I met Scott, my friends, I was living on the streets, homeless, and clueless about what was next for me. I had nowhere to stay and was wandering aimlessly," confessed the athlete from Cabaiguán, a town in the province of Sancti Spíritus, Cuba.

The story becomes even more touching as Echemendía describes their first meeting. Kathy initially told her husband that Anthony and his friend, nicknamed "Lachi," could only stay for a week.

"Who would have thought that a week turned into a year and a half? I say Kathy and Scott were angels God placed in my and Lachi's path," the wrestler shared.

In the video, recorded while Scott helps him secure a bicycle on the car roof, Echemendía emphasizes the simplicity and generosity of this American couple, from whom he has learned so much. "He is my American father," he proudly proclaims.

The young athlete took the opportunity to send a message to those who believe success is achieved alone: "Don't think you don't need anyone to achieve your goals. God created us to help each other." He was even more direct: "If it weren't for many of these people, I'd be somewhere else in the U.S., definitely not studying at a university."

Echemendía arrived in the United States in 2018, at 18, after defecting from the Cuban Greco-Roman wrestling team during a training camp in Guatemala. He crossed several countries before seeking political asylum at the U.S. border.

His tale is part of a tradition of Cuban wrestlers who have built new lives in the United States after leaving the island, like Alexis Rodríguez and Luis Ibáñez.

On social media, the athlete shares glimpses of his life in Nebraska alongside images of his trips to Cuba to visit his biological family.

Upon reaching 10,000 followers on Instagram, Echemendía explained why he chose to create content in Spanish after years of doing so in English.

"You can't lose your essence, you can't lose your roots, and we must never forget who we truly are."
