Potential Tropical Cyclone Heads Toward Gulf Coast; Florida Urged to Stay Alert

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 by Joseph Morales

Cuban meteorologist José Rubiera has issued a warning regarding the investigation system 92L located in the Gulf of Mexico. He indicated there's a strong likelihood it will transform into a tropical cyclone this week, advising residents in the northwestern part of Florida to closely monitor its progress.

In a detailed analysis shared via his YouTube channel, Rubiera revealed that the development chances for the system have surged significantly. Citing the National Hurricane Center (NHC), he noted that the probability stood at 60% over the next two days and 80% for the upcoming week.

"This is a high probability," Rubiera emphasized, pointing out that just the previous night, the system had a 0% chance of development within 48 hours and 60% over a week.

Rubiera speculated that 92L is "highly likely to become a tropical cyclone" and may reach at least tropical storm strength. Some models even suggest it could intensify into a hurricane, though he stressed it’s too early to make such predictions.

Potential Paths and Impact Areas

Special focus was given to the possible paths toward the U.S. Gulf Coast. At that time, the leading models indicated a trajectory toward an area near Mississippi and Alabama, albeit with a significant margin of uncertainty.

Rubiera explained that, although there isn’t yet an official cone since the system hasn’t formed, a potential high-probability zone could stretch from areas near Texas to northern Florida. He highlighted that the most probable zone currently lies between Mississippi and Alabama, with outer limits extending west to Louisiana and east to northwestern Florida.

"This can change significantly because the cyclone hasn’t formed yet. It must first develop; once it does, we’ll have more solid data," he cautioned.

Current Weather Conditions in Florida

For immediate weather in Florida, Rubiera forecasted showers and storms—some possibly severe—mainly in the state's northern and central parts on Tuesday, while southern areas might experience more isolated incidents.

However, these conditions should not be mistaken for a direct impact from 92L. Rubiera included these forecasts as part of the general outlook for Florida while the tropical system remains in its developmental phase in the Gulf.

Following his analysis, the situation continued to evolve. By 8:00 p.m. EDT on Monday, the National Hurricane Center raised the formation probability to 70% within 48 hours, maintaining an 80% chance over seven days. The agency anticipates a tropical depression could form by midweek.

The NHC also indicated that 92L might slowly move east-northeast over the next two days before turning north, but it remains too early to pinpoint specific impacts on the northern Gulf Coast.

Rubiera concluded by reiterating the possibility of the system developing into a tropical storm or even a hurricane, though it's premature to predict its landfall location. "We must stay vigilant over the coming days regarding the evolution and development of this tropical system," he affirmed.
