In a dramatic night-time rescue, eleven individuals, including two children, were saved in Moa, Holguín, after being caught off guard by the sudden rise of the Cayo Guan River.

The official channel, Realidades desde Holguín, reported the incident on Monday, highlighting the river's unexpected and powerful overflow that left people stranded amid the emergency situation.

According to the report, Moa's firefighters, alongside rescue teams from the Pedro Soto Alba and Ernesto Che Guevara enterprises, worked tirelessly to reach those in need. The rescue operation unfolded under hazardous and tense conditions, with rescuers carefully evacuating each person from the perilous waters.

"One by one, they managed to bring all eleven to safety," the report confirmed, noting that the two children involved were unharmed and no injuries were reported.

Holguín has seen several similar rescue operations in recent years due to river flooding and heavy rains. In September 2023, for instance, another group of ten people required rescue after being stranded by a river swell in the province during intense rainfall.

This particular incident also involved the Cayo Guan River. At that time, local broadcaster Tele Cristal reported, "Currently, the Rescue and Salvage Unit from the Pedro Soto Alba factory and Minint's Command 30 are conducting a rescue operation for 10 individuals trapped by the Cayo Guan River in Moa."

In October 2025, over 140 people, including many children and mothers, were rescued in Sagua de Tánamo after floodwaters submerged entire homes. That same month, 29 individuals, eight of whom were children, were evacuated in La Camilo, Holguín, after becoming isolated due to a river surge during Hurricane Melissa's associated rains.

Flash floods remain one of the primary hazards during intense rain episodes in eastern Cuba, particularly in low-lying areas or near riverbanks, where water levels can rise swiftly.
