Two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were injured in an accident in the Tortuguilla area of San Antonio del Sur, Guantánamo, reportedly during an illegal motorcycle race.

The pro-government platform "Guantánamo y su Verdad" reported the incident on Saturday, stating that both teens initially received medical care at the San Antonio del Sur clinic. Due to the severity of their injuries, they were later transferred to the Guantánamo Pediatric Hospital.

According to the official spokesperson’s account, some individuals contacted the page claiming that the teenagers were transported unconscious, although this detail has not been officially confirmed.

Witnesses stated that prior to the accident, there was a motorcycle exhibition at a local private business, allegedly held without municipal authorization. Following this, an illegal street race reportedly began, leading to the accident that injured the two teenagers.

Illegal Motorcycle Racing: A Persistent Issue in Cuba

For years, illegal motorcycle races have been a troubling issue across various Cuban provinces, leading to serious accidents and even fatalities.

In September 2025, a police operation in Pinar del Río resulted in fines, arrests, and the confiscation of motorcycles and other vehicles linked to illegal races. Authorities admitted that these races had become a recurring problem in multiple areas of the province.

A year earlier, police intervened in illegal motorcycle races in Villa Clara after residents complained about the competitions on the New Road to Camajuaní.

The dangers of these activities have been highlighted by previous incidents. In July 2023, footage surfaced of a motorcyclist losing control and being thrown several meters during a clandestine race in Camagüey. Despite the severity of the accident, sources close to the motorcyclist confirmed his survival.

That same year, a man was killed in Cienfuegos after being struck by two vehicles that his family claimed were racing illegally in the Rancho Luna area.

More recently, in August 2026, following the death of a young man in a motorcycle accident in Santiago de Cuba, residents once again reported illegal races and speeding in avenues like Trocha, Carrera del Morro, Ferreiro, and Garzón. It was not confirmed if the victim was participating in a race at the time.
