Hidden Gem Near Varadero: Discover a Secret Freshwater Cenote

Friday, October 2, 2026 by Christopher Ramirez

A virtually unknown freshwater cenote, even to those living nearby, has become the spotlight of a viral video circulating on social media. Adriano Perdomo took to TikTok to showcase his journey to the Cueva de los Quintanas, a natural treasure nestled in Boca de Camarioca, located in Cuba's Matanzas province.

In his video, shared in late September, Perdomo revealed that he too was unaware of the cenote's existence despite its proximity. Intrigued, he decided to explore it over the summer, initially unsure of what to expect.

His surprise was immediate. After a brief walk and taking in the sight, he understood why those who hear about this place are eager to visit. Perdomo describes it as "a stunning freshwater cenote of great depth, preserved as a natural treasure without the trappings of mass tourism," a quality that adds to its allure.

Activities and Attractions at Cueva de los Quintanas

The cenote offers several ways to enjoy its waters. A small wooden pier allows visitors to dive straight into the cenote and provides, according to Perdomo, "a beautiful view of the area." For thrill-seekers, a swing propels you directly into the water, and there's also the option to jump from the cave's high points.

"The best part of this cave is the water, where you can swim, unwind, and cool off," he adds.

The Charms of Boca de Camarioca

Boca de Camarioca is a quaint coastal village in the municipality of Cárdenas, situated at the mouth of the Camarioca River and just a short distance from Varadero. The area is a picturesque blend of small beaches, low cliffs, caves, and an inland lagoon, along with various natural spaces that define the characteristic landscape of this part of the Matanzas coastline.

Nearby, the Saturno Cave is another freshwater cenote reaching depths of up to 22 meters, known among the region's tourist attractions. However, Cueva de los Quintanas stands out as a much less frequented site, devoid of formal tourism infrastructure, appealing to those seeking natural retreats away from crowded tourist paths.

Rediscovering Cuba's Natural Heritage

In recent years, numerous Cubans have taken to social media to share images and videos of the island's lesser-known natural spots, sparking interest in exploring Cuba's natural heritage.

Perdomo concluded his video with a thoughtful reflection on the experience: "It was definitely one of those places that disconnect you from everything for a while, a site you’re grateful to have discovered, realizing it was so close all along."
