Starting Wednesday, Florida has introduced a revamped design for its driver's licenses and identification cards, a transition that will gradually affect millions of residents across the state.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) began issuing these new credentials on September 30th at offices statewide. The old design was discontinued on Tuesday.
What Do the New Licenses Look Like?
The new card showcases several symbols connected to Florida. The front features the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, and the word "Florida" is adorned with an orange. Additionally, a manatee and an alligator are cleverly integrated into the REAL ID star.
The back pays tribute to the Space Coast with an image of the shuttle Discovery, which completed 39 missions before its final landing in Florida in 2011.

The updated format also introduces specific identifiers for certain commercial driver's licenses (CDL) and commercial learner's permits (CLP). For instance, if the credential is a temporary commercial one for a non-domiciled individual, it may display the label "Temporary Non-Domiciled."
This notation should not be confused with any general marker identifying foreign nationals or non-citizens on standard Florida licenses. It specifically pertains to certain commercial credentials and the requirements applicable to their holders.
Implementation in Miami-Dade
Dariel Fernández, the Miami-Dade Tax Collector, announced that their 13 offices and TConnect mobile units are ready to issue the new credentials.
There might be minor delays during the initial days due to the necessary updates to equipment and systems required for printing the new cards.
"Driver's licenses and ID cards are crucial documents for Floridians, and when the state updates these credentials, residents should be fully informed about what to expect," Fernández stated.
Those needing to renew or replace their document can already receive the new format if they complete the process in person.

The redesign being rolled out this Wednesday should not be confused with changes approved this year by the Florida Legislature regarding citizenship information on licenses and ID cards.
Current legislation mandates that by July 1, 2027, licenses or IDs issued to applicants listed as U.S. citizens must include their citizenship status for new issuances, renewals, or replacements.
The law also specifies that individuals who become naturalized U.S. citizens can receive an updated license or ID at no cost if they promptly report their change in status.
