En a heartfelt Instagram post this Tuesday, Cuban-American radio host Enrique Santos addressed a wave of homophobic attacks he received after posting a photo celebrating the wedding of two of his friends.
The incident began on Saturday when Santos shared a picture with the grooms, Louis and Grey, at their seaside outdoor ceremony. His message, "Congratulations and blessings to the newlyweds Louis & Grey. Welcome Baby Ashton!!", garnered thousands of likes and hundreds of comments, many laced with insults and discriminatory language.
Two days later, Santos chose to address these insults in a post that surpassed 3,799 likes, describing his experience after sharing the image.
"This weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the wedding of my friends Louis and Grey. I saw them happy, surrounded by family and friends celebrating their union and the family they have now formed. I genuinely rejoiced in their happiness," he wrote.
Addressing the Hate
The radio host acknowledged that he anticipated negative reactions, but not to the extent he encountered: "I knew there would be comments. I know not everyone understands, shares, or accepts marriage between two men. What I didn't expect, or maybe I did, was such a level of hate."
What disturbed him most wasn't the insults themselves, but the profiles of those who wrote them: "What impacted me the most was entering some of these profiles and finding Bible verses, messages about God, and declarations of faith. So I wonder... what's the point of quoting God so much if you use your words to destroy others?"

Santos also addressed those who believe their words only affect strangers on a screen, reminding them that hate speech can hurt those close to them who have yet to speak openly about their sexual orientation.
"When you write 'faggots', 'queers', 'trash', and so many other vulgarities, you might think you’re attacking strangers in a photo, but you could be destroying someone you love from the inside," he warned.
His message included a call for coherence between religious beliefs and how we treat others: "Before using God to justify disdain, ask yourself if your words truly represent the love you claim to profess. Because how you treat others says a lot about you."
Santos closed his Tuesday post with a phrase that encapsulates the tone of his entire message: "Less judgment, less hate, more empathy, more respect."
