Family Provides Update on Cuban Singer Pedrito Calvo's Health After Incident in Panama

In a recent update, the family of Pedrito Calvo has clarified the health scare experienced by the iconic Cuban singer during his trip from Havana to Cali, Colombia, with a layover in Panama. The incident, which rendered him unconscious, escalated concerns among fans and fellow musicians alike.

Pedrito Calvo Junior, his son, took to Facebook to release a family statement. Initially, they preferred to keep the matter private but decided to speak out due to the circulation of various reports about the singer's condition.

As recounted by his son, on Friday, September 25, while en route to Cali, Calvo encountered a health issue during the Panama stopover that led to his brief unconsciousness.

"We received a call from the airport in Panama informing us of the situation," explained Calvo Junior. He noted that airport staff informed them that the singer would be taken to a local hospital.

Faced with the challenge of managing the situation from afar, Calvo Junior reached out to a friend, Jane Jeannette, who promptly visited the hospital to locate and support the musician.

The statement mentioned that Jeannette was able to stay close to Calvo and gather initial updates on his condition. However, due to privacy laws, medical personnel could only divulge certain details to family members or Cuban consular representatives.

Shortly after, the Cuban consul in Panama arrived at the hospital. The consul received Calvo's passport, phone, and other personal items, and doctors provided her with a more thorough update on his condition.

During the ordeal, Pedrito Calvo temporarily lost his ability to speak and move, prompting doctors to conduct several tests. "He temporarily lost speech and mobility, and various tests were conducted, all of which returned satisfactory results except for his hemoglobin levels," his son reported.

The family suggested that the issue might have stemmed from a prior intestinal virus. Further examinations, including MRI scans, ruled out any cerebrovascular complications.

"Thankfully, there is no lasting damage," Calvo Junior stated concerning the test outcomes.

Bringing relief to many, the statement confirmed that Pedrito Calvo was discharged from the hospital on Sunday. "As I write this, he has just been happily discharged," shared Calvo Junior, adding that two siblings are currently with the singer in Panama to monitor his recovery before he resumes travel.

The family expressed gratitude particularly to Jane Jeannette, as well as other friends in Panama, the Cuban Consulate, the Cuban Music Institute (ICM), and the Musicuba agency for their support.

Calvo Junior also acknowledged the overwhelming number of calls and messages following the public disclosure of his father's situation. "We always knew our father was loved and admired, but it's during times like these that we truly realize the extent of the public's affection," he remarked.

This family update follows a public gesture by Los Van Van, who requested an applause for Pedrito Calvo during a concert, revealing he was facing a severe health issue. On stage, Jorge Leliebre, also known as LeLe, remarked, "Pedrito Calvo, the voice behind many of Los Van Van's hits, is seriously ill today."

Later, the band released a message offering "a hug," "strength," and "all the love" to the celebrated Sandunguero Mayor, though they did not provide specific details at that time.

The family's information clarifies that the health crisis occurred during the singer's international journey. Despite losing consciousness, speech, and mobility temporarily, medical tests ruled out cerebrovascular issues, and he has been discharged, as explained by his son.
