Trump Predicts Collapse of Cuban Regime at UN General Assembly

On Tuesday, Donald Trump utilized the world's foremost international forum to forecast the downfall of Cuba's government, labeling the nation an "absolutely failed state" during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. In protest, the Cuban delegation exited the room as the U.S. president made these remarks.

According to C-SPAN's broadcast, Trump was unambiguous with the global leaders gathered in New York: “My administration seeks a fundamental shift regarding Cuba, where the communist regime is under immense pressure, the greatest it's ever faced. It is an absolutely failed state. And it will fall.”

Trump also disclosed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is actively engaging in negotiations with Havana: “Marco Rubio is leading the talks. We’ll see what happens. We won’t permit a haven for foreign adversaries to threaten the U.S. at our doorstep.”

He concluded his segment on Cuba with a promise: “Communism will never reach America, but freedom will reach Cuba, and security will come to Mexico.”

Accusations of Subversion and Links to Radical Groups

Trump made sweeping accusations against the regime, linking it to networks operating within the United States.

“The Cuban regime has spent decades coordinating with left-wing radicals and communist networks within America. As detailed by our State Department, they’ve established ties with subversive and radical groups like the Communist Party USA, Antifa, and the Democratic Socialists of America,” he asserted.

These claims are backed by a State Department report released in July, spanning around 100 pages, alleging the regime has maintained espionage and ideological subversion networks in the U.S. for decades.

Cuban Delegation Walks Out During Speech

As Trump made these statements, representatives from the Cuban government present in the room stood up and left, marking one of the day’s most conspicuous diplomatic gestures.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, leading Havana's delegation, had earlier denied any formal negotiations with Washington, although he acknowledged some channels of communication between the two governments.

U.S. Sanctions and Economic Strain

The Cuban government accuses the United States of enforcing what it terms a “genocidal blockade,” estimating losses from sanctions to reach $8.1 billion by 2025.

Trump's speech at the UN was not an isolated incident; his administration has implemented over two dozen sanctions against Cuba since January, including recent measures targeting military and nickel sector entities.

This was also the first instance of Trump making such declarations from the world’s top multilateral platform, with the Cuban delegation present.

The economic crisis in Cuba exacerbates the situation: according to ECLAC, Cuba’s economy is projected to contract by 10.3% in 2026, marking the worst decline in Latin America, with power outages lasting up to 22 hours daily and an annual inflation rate of 20.70% in July.

Cuba Within Trump’s Hemispheric Agenda

Trump’s remarks on Cuba were part of a broader segment focused on the Western Hemisphere, where he also defended his administration’s actions in Venezuela — including the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January 2026 — and the oil agreement with interim President Delcy Rodríguez.

“Our actions in Venezuela demonstrate that the United States will no longer allow threats to gain ground anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, and if necessary, we will use our unparalleled military might to safeguard America's vital national interests,” he warned.

Rodríguez Parrilla is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Friday, September 26, where the Cuban regime is expected to officially respond to Trump’s statements.
