Ukraine Makes History by Deploying Kamikaze Robots Behind Russian Lines for the First Time

In an unprecedented move in modern warfare, Ukraine's Third Army Corps has taken a significant step by deploying kamikaze ground robots behind Russian lines using heavy bomber drones. This groundbreaking strategy is part of Operation Vivaldi in the northern part of Donetsk Oblast.

Lieutenant General Andrii Biletskyi, the commander of the corps, hailed the maneuver as a world first: "The Third Army Corps is the first in the world to deploy ground robotic systems. Our heavy bomber drones deliver suicide ground drones over 10 kilometers into enemy territory."

The Ukrainian media outlet, RBC Ukraine, noted that while aerial delivery of ground robots was not entirely new for Ukrainian forces, it was indeed "the first time it has been used for unmanned kamikaze ground systems at such a distance."

Revolutionary Tactics in Modern Warfare

According to a Newsweek report, the tactic involved deploying a wave of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and drones ahead of infantry, penetrating more than ten kilometers into the Russian tactical rear. Their mission was to target command posts, communication hubs, logistics, crossings, and enemy reserves before the assault troops advanced.

As these robots created chaos behind Russian lines, Ukrainian air defense and electronic warfare systems established a so-called "protective dome," suppressing enemy drones and preventing Moscow from detecting operational plans.

The Third Corps issued a statement on Telegram: "The blinded enemy could not uncover our operational plan, and our units entrenched themselves in the liberated areas."

Strategic Achievements of Operation Vivaldi

The philosophy behind this deployment was encapsulated in another statement from the Corps: "Infantry wins wars, but we safeguard our soldiers, sending robots ahead to confront the enemy first."

This second phase of Operation Vivaldi, confirmed on Sunday, also delivered tangible territorial gains: three localities northwest of Lyman—Shandryholove, Derylove, and Drobysheve—came under Ukrainian control, adding approximately 19 square miles of liberated territory.

Biletskyi reported that more than 800 Russian soldiers were eliminated during this phase, with total losses—including deaths, injuries, and captures—exceeding 3,000 troops.

Since the onset of Operation Vivaldi, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has confirmed the liberation of 125 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, with 50 km² de-occupied. Biletskyi also noted that their forces are simultaneously wearing down three Russian armies: the 20th, the 25th, and the First Tank Army.

The Strategic Objective and Future Prospects

The strategic goal of the operation, conducted during the summer of 2026, was to halt the Russian salient north of Lyman, which threatened to encircle the "Fortress Belt"—a cluster of heavily defended cities, including Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, and Kostiantynivka—forming the core of Ukraine's defense in the Donbas region.

This deployment is part of a broader trend: Ukraine has made ground robots a cornerstone of its combat doctrine, executing over 22,000 missions in the first three months of 2026, with the Ministry of Defense acquiring 25,000 ground robotic systems in the first half of the year.

In April, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that, for the first time in the war, an enemy position was seized exclusively using unmanned platforms, with no infantry involvement and zero casualties.

However, military analyst Giorgi Revishvili cautioned that while Ukraine's local successes are notable, they are unlikely to alter the Kremlin's maximalist demands. "Consequently, there are few prospects for real negotiations, at least until next spring," he told Newsweek.

Retired Australian General Mick Ryan offered a broader assessment: "We may be approaching, or are already in the midst of, a shift towards a new phase of this war."
