A sudden and unexpected tornado caught Lighthouse Point residents off guard this past Friday as several thunderstorms converged over South Florida, bringing heavy rainfall and flood warnings throughout the region.
The Miami office of the National Weather Service (NWS) reported the occurrence around 1:30 p.m., identifying it specifically as a landspout. This phenomenon occurred as multiple storms clashed in the area.
While "landspout" doesn't have a widely-used equivalent in Spanish, the NWS glossary describes it as a type of tornado that forms without the organized rotation typical of more intense tornadoes, lacking an association with a mesocyclone.
The agency shared a video credited to Brooke S. and Bobby R., showcasing the rotating column descending to the ground amidst the turbulent weather.
Short-lived, the landspout emerged amid several hours of intense rain impacting various parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties. Weather conditions prompted the NWS to issue multiple flood warnings during the afternoon.
By 2:25 p.m., reports indicated that between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen over central Broward, with the potential for an additional inch or two. Lighthouse Point was specifically mentioned in the advisory.
Minor flooding in low-lying areas with poor drainage systems, as well as water accumulation on roads, were the chief concerns.
According to a Telemundo 51 report, a low-pressure system was moving across Florida from east to west, combining with high humidity to create numerous showers and storms.
Some of these storms had the potential to release rain at rates of one to three inches per hour, with localized totals reaching two to five inches throughout the day on Friday.
Rain-related issues had already begun early in the day. At 6:00 a.m., the NWS issued a flood warning for southern Broward due to heavy downpours associated with thunderstorms, with rainfall amounts between one and two inches and additional similar amounts expected.
Warnings later extended to other parts of the county. The NWS reported minor flooding and water on roads, noting issues near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
The unstable weather was not expected to subside by Friday's end. Telemundo 51's forecast indicated increased humidity on Saturday, with more showers and storms in the afternoon and early evening, maintaining high rain chances in the following days.
Rotating storm phenomena are not uncommon in Florida. Earlier in September, a dramatic waterspout was spotted off the coast, drawing attention on social media.
In April, strong winds and rain caused significant damage in Palm Springs North, Miami-Dade. Although residents described it as a tornado with waterspouts visible over a nearby lake, the NWS later clarified that the damages did not match those typically associated with a confirmed tornado.
