The Provincial Commission for Road Safety in Havana has announced that the Línea Tunnel will operate under restrictions for three consecutive days starting this Thursday.
The commission stated the partial closure will occur from September 17 to September 19, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., to carry out essential maintenance work.
This closure will be implemented in stages, initially affecting the direction from Plaza de la Revolución to Playa, followed by the reverse direction from Playa to Plaza de la Revolución.
Several public transportation routes will be directly impacted by this measure. According to Havana's Provincial Transportation Company, routes P1, P5, 8, 20, 34, and 37 will alter their usual paths during the maintenance period.
Route P1, which is one of the most heavily used in the capital and runs between La Rosita and Playa, goes directly through the tunnel, meaning its diversion will significantly affect thousands of public transit users in Havana.
Private vehicle drivers are advised to use three alternative routes: 23rd Street, 41st Avenue, and the Malecón.
The Línea Tunnel links Línea Avenue in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality with the Miramar area in the Playa municipality, passing beneath the Almendares River. It is one of Havana's three underground road structures, along with the Calzada Tunnel and the Bay Tunnel.
Such maintenance interventions are commonplace in Havana's road infrastructure. A similar closure was executed in August 2024 in the same Línea Tunnel for painting, pothole repairs, and structural maintenance.
More recently, partial closures occurred in the Bay Tunnel on September 14 and 16, also during daytime hours and alternating directions.
The authorities maintain a consistent approach: segmental closures in alternating directions during daylight, with pre-established alternative routes and traffic officers present to guide drivers.
