Former CIA Director David Petraeus Present During Russian Drone Strike on Ukrainian Train Station

David Petraeus, the former CIA chief and retired U.S. Army general, was at the Yahodyn station in western Ukraine when a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Sunday, according to a report by the Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsia to CNN.

Just moments before the strike, a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, and other top European security officials had departed that very station. The early departure was due to the "constant threat of Russian attacks," as Ukrzaliznytsia explained.

The diplomatic convoy had already crossed into Polish territory when the drone hit the locomotive of the Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train, merely two kilometers from the Polish border.

Petraeus was traveling on a separate train that was still at the Yahodyn station at the time of the impact. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the attack.

The railway operator noted that while details were still being confirmed, it was "highly probable" that the drone had deliberately targeted the officials' train.

All those mentioned had attended the Yalta European Strategy (YES) international security conference, held secretly in the basement of a Kyiv hotel on September 11 and 12, drawing nearly 700 participants from 28 countries.

Bildt shared his perspective on the proximity of the impact: "This wasn't our train, but the one following us at the border crossing with Poland," he posted on X, alongside a video capturing the drone strike as passengers fled.

Johnson condemned the attack, questioning, "What twisted logic led Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive?" He added, "What we can assert with certainty is that this is the type of random and senseless assault Ukrainians endure daily, even on civilian railways."

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha framed the incident as a direct threat to the Western bloc: "This is Putin's terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO."

On the same day, another Russian drone targeted a gas station in Yahodyn, sparking a fire and briefly closing the border crossing, a key route for Western military and humanitarian aid entering Ukraine.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, present in Kyiv, labeled the attacks as "an escalation" and warned they pose "another significant challenge for Ukraine, but also for the potential future victims of Russian aggression."

Russia justified its actions through its state agency TASS, claiming its forces were attacking "railway infrastructure in western Ukraine used for transporting military supplies from European countries."

The Polish defense minister confirmed that a drone fell one kilometer from the Polish border and another five kilometers away, amid Russia's ongoing escalation against civilian infrastructure in western Ukraine.

The train attack occurred less than a week after a Russian drone violated Moldovan airspace as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was about to depart from Chișinău airport, a series of incidents that Kyiv and its allies view as a deliberate escalation by Moscow toward NATO's borders.

British Defense Minister Wes Streeting concluded the day with a warning: "The reckless and dangerous attacks on civilian infrastructure so close to Poland underscore the broader security threat posed by Russia."
