Fire Contained at Matanzas Supertanker Base: No Casualties or Threat of Spread

A fire ignited on Friday at one of the tanks at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, located within the province's Industrial Zone, as reported by Periódico Girón on their Facebook page. The flames were successfully managed by the Fire Brigade with the cooperation of the Ministry of the Interior and other agencies, with no casualties reported.

According to the local media, the blaze began during maintenance work on a completely empty tank. "An accident occurred during maintenance operations on an empty tank, leading to a fire that was swiftly controlled by the Fire Brigade and auxiliary forces from the Ministry of the Interior and other entities," detailed Girón.

Officials have ruled out any major threat. The same source noted, "The incident poses no danger of spreading or threat to nearby residents," a reassurance quickly disseminated by official sources to quell any public anxiety about the installation.

The Legacy of the 2022 Disaster

The Matanzas Supertanker Base carries the burden of Cuba's most significant industrial disaster in recent history. On August 5, 2022, a lightning strike hit tank 52, sparking a fire that spread to other tanks, ultimately consuming four out of the eight tanks at the facility. The catastrophe resulted in 17 deaths, over 130 injuries, and material losses exceeding $60 million. The fire required seven days to extinguish, with international support.

Rebuilding Efforts Underway

Since then, efforts to rebuild the facility have been ongoing. Cuban and Chinese teams are involved in constructing four new tanks, each with a 50,000-cubic-meter capacity, aiming to restore the total storage capacity to 200,000 cubic meters. By September 2025, Chinese workers were installing the domes on the new tanks, with project completion expected this year.

In April 2026, state company CUPET announced repairs on another tank, expected to conclude in May. The area has experienced scares since 2022; notably, a brush fire near the base in June 2024 was quickly contained without causing any damage.

This new incident emerges at a particularly critical time for Cuba, which is grappling with a severe energy crisis characterized by extended blackouts and fuel shortages affecting the entire population. The collective trauma from the 2022 tragedy remains palpable. On the recent fourth anniversary of the disaster, a tribute was held for the 17 individuals who lost their lives at the base. Just five weeks later, flames once again lit up the Matanzas skyline, though this time, according to authorities, without the catastrophic consequences of that fateful night in August 2022.
