Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of 148,663 Mustang vehicles from the model years 2024, 2025, and 2026 due to a significant wiring system defect that could result in an unexpected loss of traction power, increasing the risk of accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States released an official statement indicating that, "The engine compartment wiring harness ground connections could fracture, potentially leading to power loss or failure of systems such as windshield wipers, headlights, air conditioning, or the engine cooling fan. Consequently, these vehicles do not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) numbers 108, 'Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment,' and 104, 'Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems.'"
Understanding the Technical Glitch
The root of the issue lies in the ground lug terminals of the wiring harness, which may fracture due to vibration-induced fatigue. The technical dossier attributes this to the intrusion of heat-shrink adhesive that bends the lug and shortens its lifespan. This recall is officially registered with the NHTSA as campaign number 26V547000 and bears Ford's internal code 26C40.
All affected vehicles belong to the seventh generation of the Mustang, designated as the S650, which debuted as the 2024 model and includes the EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse variants. These were assembled at Ford's Flat Rock plant in Michigan between September 2022 and June 2026.
Ford estimates that about 1% of the recalled vehicles actually exhibit the defect. As of the announcement, the company reported no known accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Interim notification letters were sent to owners around August 31. However, a comprehensive solution will not be broadly available at dealerships until approximately March 2027, when final remedy letters will also be distributed.
