The primary cross atop the main tower of the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre now shines with new lighting. This enhancement marks the final phase of restoration efforts at this iconic temple located in Santiago de Cuba.
On Thursday, the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba announced via Facebook that the cross was illuminated starting Wednesday.
"As part of completing the restoration of El Cobre Sanctuary, the cross on the main tower of the Basilica has been lit since yesterday," the religious institution stated.
The Archdiocese further mentioned that "the Mother of Charity's main house is focusing on details that bring more life to our symbols."
Photographs shared reveal the cross glowing against the night sky atop the sanctuary’s dome, highlighting the work done on the tower's upper section.
This new lighting is a segment of recovery efforts initiated after Hurricane Melissa inflicted severe damage in October 2025.
The hurricane severely impacted Santiago de Cuba, causing destruction to sculptures, stained glass, and other elements of El Cobre Sanctuary.
Initial images post-hurricane showed significant damage to the temple.
One of the most symbolic losses was the collapse of a marble angel statue located at the entrance of the sanctuary.
The statue sustained severe damage and underwent restoration by the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana.
In February, the Archdiocese announced the completion of restoration work on the angel, conducted with the involvement of Cuban sculptor José Duverger Aliaga.
Recovery efforts have also included exterior lighting enhancements. In March, the sanctuary’s staircase was re-illuminated at night following repairs to walls, lamps, and luminaires.
During that period, it was also reported that the religious complex was expanding the use of inverters and solar panels to maintain services amid the country's ongoing power issues.
The illumination of the cross coincides with particularly meaningful days for devotees of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre.
Since August 30, Cuban Catholics have participated in a novena preparing for the feast day of Cuba's Patroness, concluding on September 8.
El Cobre Sanctuary will serve as a major gathering point during these days, hosting masses, prayers, and special celebrations for the pilgrims.
This year’s prayer includes intentions for families, the sick, those in need, and also for those governing Cuba.
