The United States has launched a special dollar coin featuring President Donald Trump, issued in celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary of independence. The coin will hold legal tender status.
The U.S. Mint began selling the coin this Wednesday, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).
On one side, Trump’s portrait is prominently displayed, while the reverse features the Great Seal of the United States.
The obverse of the coin includes the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776 ~ 2026” alongside the president's image.
The reverse side showcases the Presidential Seal depicting an eagle clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, accompanied by the phrases “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
This special edition also incorporates the number "250," marking the U.S. Semiquincentennial, according to the official U.S. Mint description.
Despite its gold-like appearance, the coin is not made of gold. The U.S. Mint specifies that it’s primarily composed of copper, with additional elements of zinc, manganese, and nickel. The coin weighs 8.10 grams, measures 26.49 millimeters in diameter, and was minted in Philadelphia.
A roll of 25 coins is available for $61, while a bag containing 100 coins is priced at $154.50.
Additionally, there is a unique version. On July 4th, the U.S. Mint produced 250,000 coins with a special “July 4th” commemorative mark, randomly inserted into some of the rolls and bags for sale.
The design previously received approval from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump.
President Trump described the idea of featuring his likeness on a coin as “very unusual,” yet he expressed feeling “honored” by the initiative.
The coin has sparked controversy due to federal regulations that typically restrict living presidents from appearing on U.S. currency. However, AP noted that the Treasury Secretary has the authority to approve special coinage under certain circumstances.
This coin is part of a 2026 special program marking 250 years of the United States. It includes unique designs for various coins such as the dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar.
The introduction of Trump’s image on the coin is one of several initiatives during his second term that have seen his name or likeness appear on American programs, documents, and facilities.
For instance, in April, the U.S. released a limited edition of commemorative passports featuring Trump’s image on the inner cover and his signature in gold lettering, also celebrating the 250th independence anniversary.
Moreover, the Trump Gold Card initiative targets wealthy foreigners, offering them permanent residency in exchange for a million-dollar contribution plus a processing fee. As of late April, only one individual had been approved through this program, according to congressional data.
Another tribute took place in Florida on July 9th, when Palm Beach International Airport was officially renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, making it the first airport named after a sitting president in the country.
