Eddy Ceballos, the satirical mind behind the Despingovery Channel, remains in detention after a recent legal appeal on his behalf was denied. This development comes three months following his initial arrest, leaving the young creator still under preventive custody.
His mother, Marieta Pérez, took to Facebook to express her frustration over the decision, revealing that the authorities persist in their accusation of disclosing state security secrets. With the case now awaiting the Military Tribunal, the family's hopes for a resolution remain distant.
"The appeal for Eddy Ceballos has been rejected. Authorities claim he committed a crime against state security," Pérez shared in her post.
Pérez further challenged the credibility of the evidence against her son and criticized the ongoing imprisonment despite their family's protests.
"It doesn't matter what he, his family, friends, or the public think; nor do the weak and dubious pieces of evidence against him. Eddy remains conveniently behind bars in preventive detention," she declared.
Three Months Behind Bars
Ceballos was apprehended on June 1st in the Diez de Octubre municipality of Havana. His arrest followed the release of a video showing him exploring an abandoned military site with deteriorated Soviet missiles, radars, and bunkers.
Initially charged with "military property invasion," a term that Cubalex criticized as nonexistent in Cuba's current Penal Code, the charges against him were later altered to "disclosure of secrets concerning State Security," under Article 116 of the Penal Code, bringing the case under military jurisdiction.
Throughout the past three months, Ceballos' family has highlighted several irregularities. In June, his mother alleged physical assault during his custody. By July, family visits were denied following his transfer from Combinado del Este to the 100 y Aldabó detention center.
Most recently, on August 19, the prosecution rejected a defense request to modify his precautionary measures.
From behind bars, Ceballos has sent a letter refuting the accusations, identifying himself as "an artist, not a spy," while also detailing issues with food and water access during his imprisonment.
