Hurtado describes the night of her escape as a harrowing experience filled with freezing temperatures, heavy luggage, an unpaid train ride, and the sudden appearance of agents at six in the morning searching for the missing athletes.
Now residing in France with a ten-year permanent residency and holding an unbeaten 3-0 record in mixed martial arts, Hurtado revealed in her Instagram videos that her decision was made long before she boarded the plane from Cuba.
"Before leaving Cuba, I was already certain about my decision. I knew I wasn't going back," she stated in the first episode of her series.
Covert Planning Amidst Olympic Preparations
The team was in Amiens, about two hours from Paris, preparing for Olympic qualifying competitions. Initially, Hurtado intended to wait until the Paris Grand Slam to defect, but plans shifted when she learned a teammate also wished to flee.
Coordinating their escape without drawing suspicion was their first hurdle: "You couldn't talk about it because you never know who you can trust, or if someone would snitch to the coach," she explained. They relied on a trusted friend familiar with the process for help.
A Night of Challenges and Courage
The night of their escape posed another challenge: Hurtado shared a room with a teammate not involved in the plan, who was suffering from insomnia.
Eventually, they managed to slip away into the night, in an unfamiliar city, without speaking French, and leaving most of their belongings behind.
"We left in the early hours, unable to speak French, without our luggage. We left all our tobacco boxes behind. Everything was left there, the kimonos, because they were too heavy," she recalled.
They walked for about 30 minutes in biting cold to reach a train station. "There was a train to Paris at 6 a.m. It was freezing cold," she described.
Unaware of how to buy tickets, they boarded the train without paying: "We didn't pay for the train. We didn't know how. If a conductor had caught us, we might have been fined."
Aftermath of a Daring Escape
At dawn, the Cuban team's response was swift. According to Hurtado, security agents, whom she referred to as "the FBI," burst into the rooms of the judokas who remained with the delegation.
"The 'FBI' busted down the door of the remaining team members' room, saying a group had stayed behind," she noted in the third episode. Hurtado had blocked all the coaches and left communication groups, so she didn’t know if they tried to contact her.
The outcome had a bittersweet and almost comedic twist: "The coaches kept the tobacco boxes we left, and the girls took the clothes, kimonos, and other items. They did well," she recounted with a laugh.
Hurtado was the first of five Cuban judokas to defect during that tour in France, alongside Vanesa Godínez, Blanca Elena Torres, Lutmary García, and Santa Virgen Romero.
That year, over 100 Cuban athletes abandoned their delegations in various countries, spanning sports like boxing, baseball, karate, rowing, and hockey, among others.
"I believe this story has no end. It wasn't easy," concluded Hurtado, who plans to release more episodes of her story. "I swear I am only telling the truth," she assured.
