Yuriorkis Gamboa Triumphs in Bare Knuckle Boxing Debut

Yuriorkis Gamboa, former world champion and Athens 2004 Olympic gold medalist, marked his successful entry into bare knuckle boxing on Saturday. Competing at BKB 58 held at Miami's James L. Knight Center, Gamboa defeated Nicaraguan opponent Yesner "Cuajadita" Talavera by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the bout 50-44 in his favor.

At 44, "The Cyclone of Guantánamo" made it clear that his venture into bare knuckle boxing—a format where fighters battle without gloves, using only light hand wraps—is not a farewell gesture but the beginning of a new chapter with aspirations for a world title.

Anticipated Fights and Noteworthy Performances

This bout was among the most anticipated of the night, which featured another Cuban, Gustavo Trujillo, in the main event. Trujillo successfully defended his BKB heavyweight title by knocking out American Mick Terrill in the second round, maintaining his undefeated streak of nine wins, all by knockout.

Gamboa enters this discipline with a professional record of 30 victories—18 by knockout—and five losses, having faced notable opponents like Terence Crawford, Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney, and Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz. Crawford himself publicly admired Gamboa as one of his toughest challengers and the hardest puncher he encountered.

New Contracts and Future Ambitions

Under the guidance of coach Eric Castaños, Gamboa has signed a multi-year contract with BKB Bare Knuckle Boxing, expressing that bare knuckle boxing is "the oldest form of boxing" with his eyes set on the organization's world championship.

Personal Challenges and a Return to the Ring

Gamboa's debut in Miami comes two years after a challenging period in his life. On December 31, 2022, he was involved in a tragic incident in Santiago de Cuba, where he accidentally struck a pedestrian with a rental vehicle. He was immediately detained, and his passport was confiscated, keeping him in Cuba for over 18 months. It wasn't until August 12, 2024, that a judge acquitted him, allowing him to return to Miami later that month, eager to resume his career.

Reflecting on the legal ordeal, Gamboa stated, "There was no need for bribery... the right thing was done, and it was ultimately proven that I was not at fault."

Gamboa's career highlights include winning the WBA featherweight title in 2009 and the IBF title in 2010, making him the first Cuban to hold that belt. With his recent victory, the "Cyclone" now boasts a 1-0 record in this new arena and aims to establish himself as a leading figure in bare knuckle boxing, following in Trujillo's footsteps, who already reigns supreme in the BKB heavyweight division.
