Born in 1934 in Asturias, Spain, Father Vega made Cuba his home, planting deep roots in Cienfuegos, where he spent his entire consecrated life. His ordination as a priest took place on March 1, 1964, in the very Santa Iglesia Cathedral of Cienfuegos, the same church where his wake would later be held.

"Now, it will be that same community who comes to the Cathedral to accompany him," said the Diocese.
The death of Father Vega adds to a series of losses that have struck the Cuban Catholic Church in 2026: the emeritus bishop of Pinar del Río, Jorge Enrique Serpa Pérez, died in April at 84 years old; Monsignor Silvano Pedroso Montalvo passed away in June at 73; and Monsignor Enrique Aurelio García departed in July at 91 years old.
