Orphaned Puppies Saved in Cienfuegos, Adopted by Another Dog

In a heartwarming yet troubling incident, eight newborn puppies found themselves orphaned at La Punta beach in Cienfuegos after their mother was reportedly drowned by a man when she attempted to protect them. Thanks to the swift response from local residents and the Animal Arcoiris Project, the entire litter was rescued that same night.

According to a Facebook post from the organization, the man approached the puppies, prompting the mother to defend her litter. Rather than retreat, the man allegedly dragged the dog into the water, resulting in her tragic death.

"What is most outrageous is that this happened in Cienfuegos, a small city where everyone knows each other, yet no one has come forward. It is unacceptable that in the year 2026, with phones in everyone's hands, no one stopped this atrocity," the project stated, urging the community to help identify the perpetrator.

An Animal Arcoiris member went to La Punta that night and saved the eight puppies. By dawn, the kindness of several individuals had already secured ways to feed and shelter them.

Finding New Hope for the Puppies

Seven of the puppies were fortunate enough to be accepted by a dog experiencing a false pregnancy, which allowed her to produce milk. "She welcomed them with great affection, nursed, and cleaned them," the organization reported in an update.

The eighth puppy required special attention due to injuries on its nose and mouth, likely caused by a rodent bite, raising concerns about its ability to compete for food with its siblings.

Another kind woman, whose dog had recently given birth, offered to take in the injured puppy. "It took some effort, but he eventually started nursing," Animal Arcoiris shared, noting they are closely monitoring the puppy's recovery.

Call for Justice and Awareness

After ensuring the puppies' safety, the project urged Cienfuegos authorities to take action and reiterated their call for help in identifying the man responsible for the act. "Why have animal protection laws if they are not enforced? How long will we allow such acts to be forgotten?" they questioned.

This incident highlights ongoing issues of animal cruelty in Cuba and the insufficient response from institutions. Although animal welfare regulations have been in place since 2021, activists repeatedly criticize their enforcement. In May 2025, a man accused of animal abuse and deaths was briefly detained in Cienfuegos but released shortly after.

In the same month, a man who beat a dog to death in Mayabeque was fined 3,000 pesos, a penalty that sparked outrage among animal advocates.

Activists also point out that Cuba still falls short of fully implementing its own animal welfare legislation, with many rescues relying heavily on volunteers and independent organizations.

Animal Arcoiris concluded by appealing for support for the families that took in the puppies and are now responsible for their care: "Any assistance for the owners of these generous dogs would be greatly appreciated, as it is an additional burden for them."
