The Hermanos Cordové Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Manzanillo, located in Granma province, was the recipient of a generous donation of medical supplies and medications this past Saturday. The delivery was organized by the sociocultural project Corales del Golfo in conjunction with the Surprise Gift Agency RL, as reported by Radio Bayamo.

The donated items included fever medications, swabs, dressings, syringes, needles, gloves, and face masks, all essential for pediatric care.

Dr. Alberto Damián García Guerra, the hospital's director, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the families and healthcare staff. "These supplies will be crucial for treating our young patients, particularly those in intensive care, oncology, and cardiology wards," stated García.

Additionally, the gesture was supported by the French project Un toit Pour Cuba, which has frequently participated in similar charitable initiatives throughout the region, the report noted.

The Hermanos Cordové hospital, the oldest pediatric facility in Granma, serves a wide area from Bartolomé Masó to Pilón, including the Cauto and Guacanayabo regions.

Healthcare System Under Strain

This donation comes at a critical time, as the province grapples with severe shortages of medical supplies. In July, an activist highlighted the dire situation at the Manzanillo hospital, where even the emergency room lacked basic necessities for treating an accident victim.

The national healthcare situation is equally troubling. A shocking 461 out of 651 essential medicines were unavailable in state pharmacies as of April, representing over 70% of the essential drug list.

José Ángel Portal Miranda, the Minister of Public Health, admitted in February that the health system is "on the brink of collapse."

International Aid as a Lifeline

This dependency on external aid is a recurring theme across Cuba. Recently, private economic actors delivered juice to the Las Tunas pediatric hospital due to the absence of fruit purees for the children there. Similarly, the Juan Bruno Zayas hospital in Santiago received medical supplies from a Chilean solidarity group earlier this month.

In early August, the Bahamas announced the first of three shipments of pediatric cancer medications to Cuba, addressing the alarming drop in cancer survival rates among children from 85% to 65%, as noted by the Cuban ambassador.
