Plane Crashes into Atlantic Off Florida Beach; Pilot Hospitalized as Precaution

Saturday, August 22, 2026 by Ernesto Alvarez

A small aircraft plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near the shores of Boca Raton, Florida, on Saturday morning. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure after surviving the crash, according to local authorities.

Emergency teams from Boca Raton Fire Rescue along with local police responded to reports of a small engine plane crash around 10:25 a.m. near 250 S. Ocean Blvd.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the aircraft as a Piper PA-30, confirming it had departed from Page Field in Fort Myers and was en route to South Bimini Airport in the Bahamas.

"A Piper PA-30 crashed into the ocean approximately 2 miles east of Boca Raton Airport, Florida, around 10:40 a.m. local time," the FAA stated in an official release, noting that only the pilot was aboard.

Officials at Boca Raton Airport clarified that while the aircraft had permission to land there, it did not originate from their facility. The emergency was declared during its flight.

According to a report by BocaNewsNow, the pilot is a 23-year-old woman who allegedly reported an electrical issue soon after takeoff, prompting her to head toward the ocean. This information has not been officially confirmed.

The pilot was unharmed and was hospitalized solely as a precaution, confirmed Boca Raton police.

The incident was witnessed by beachgoers who captured the plane gliding at a dangerously low altitude over the water's surface before crashing. "That's unexpected. I don't think that plane is made for water landing," a bystander remarked in a video aired by CBS News.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the marine unit of the Boca Raton police remained on the scene, while the FAA initiated a formal investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was also expected to participate.

Boca Raton has seen several aviation accidents in recent years. In April 2025, a Cessna 310R crashed near Military Trail and Glades Road, resulting in the deaths of three family members. Months later, another small plane crashed in a residential area in Lake Worth Beach, Palm Beach County, injuring at least seven people.

The downed aircraft was scheduled to be retrieved from the water on Sunday as the precise cause of the crash remains under official investigation.
